Hi,
Is the area around Amtrak in Detroit safe? I plan to arrive in Detroit by Amtrak and take Detroit Department of Transportation (DDOT) bus to the Renessance center (and back). Would you consider this trip safe for a single female to make?
Thanks!!
Detroit Amtrak - safe?I wouldn%26#39;t consider it overly dangerous but I also don%26#39;t know if I%26#39;d deem it as extremely safe. The station is fine. It also depends on the time of day you%26#39;re planning on arriving.
Detroit Amtrak - safe?Amtrak has only 3 arrivals per day in Detroit: mid-afternoon, early evening and about a half hour after midnight.
Depending upon the month of your visit, the 6:45 p.m. arrival could be in darkness or in daylight. Personally, I would not feel comfortable arriving at night and waiting for the bus. Daytime should be OK.
The Amtrak station is not in the best (or worst) area and there aren%26#39;t usually a lot of people around. That said, there will be other passengers getting off and on the train with you, which will reduce the isolated feeling.
I traveled to and from detroit amtrack many times by my self. I have done it since i was 14. I would go to visit family and I have never had any problems at all. I am now 21 and have made the trip atleast 2x a year.
Unlike the previous posters I will not disagree with there views at all. The train station in Detroit is nothing very glamourous at all- more or less a small building with little service. I have been there and if you have had a long trip and luggage from say Chicago I would jump in a taxi to the ren cen . Detroit is certainly not as bad as it is written about, but certainly complete strangers will come and ask for money etc.. a firm no answer keeps them away. have fun
Where are you comimg from on Amtrack. And where are you going? If you are coming from Chigago, you could get off in Dearborn, a much, much safer area. (my home town) and still catch a Michigan Ave bus going downtown. Do you have special plans for Detroit??? Dearborn is very close to the henry ford museum and greenfield village, one of the major attractions in the area.
I not sure about how ';safe'; the Detroit stop is. But, I can tell you I feel very comfortable about the Dearborn stop---it is right behind the Dearborn Police station.
The Dearborn train station is also small. The station is set back off Michigan ave, but I think there are bus%26#39;s that run to downtown Detroit from Michigan Ave, which run%26#39;s into downtown.
