Family-friendly vacation?

Saugatuck looks wonderful! We%26#39;d love to visit. My husband and I are anxious to get away in Aug. however, will be bringing our 10 mo. old baby. I%26#39;ve got two questions:

1) I%26#39;ve heard the Saugatuck Harbor Inn is family-friendly. Thoughts about the Inn? Are there any other spots we should check out? We%26#39;ll be ';stuck'; in the inn after his bedtime, so a motor lodge set-up won%26#39;t work....we%26#39;d climb the walls. Also, we%26#39;d rather not rent a house.

2) Are there enough restaurants in town that are family-friendly? Sounds as though the town is a big gay destination; makes me think ';adult crowd';...not in the XXX way, just in age;-) Are the majority of restaurants up-scale? Will we be frowned upon bringing an infant to dinner at a pub-type, lakefront place?

Thanks!

Family-friendly vacation?

You might look into Twin Oaks Inn or Twin Gables for lodging, both are kid friendly. Restaurants could be tricky but there%26#39;s lots of options from Burger King to top notch dining. Go to Saugatuckdouglas.com and check out some of the web sites. Butler, Mermaid, Marros would be good kid options.

Family-friendly vacation?

We just returned from a 4-day vacation in Saugatuck. We had a wonderful time checking out the stores in town and enjoying the scenery.

I did feel that we were definitely in the minority being a married couple with kids. We didn%26#39;t see many kids in town. There were a few more at Oval Beach but we were “warned” that the north end of the beach draws the gay crowd so we stayed south toward the concession stand.

We ate at Coral Gables and Morro’s – both very nice and family friendly. We also took in a free concert in the park on Wednesday night. The majority of the couples and groups there were gay but we didn’t see any public displays of affection (“Not that there’s anything wrong with that.”)

Bottom line, we found Saugatuck to be a fun, classy, hip, artsy little town and we’re looking forward to going back next year.

I think you%26#39;ll have a great time with your baby there. Yes Saugatuck has a certain reputation but I%26#39;ve seen the park across from the tennis courts filled with young families. Most ot the restaurants are family-friendly. Marros, Pumpernickel%26#39;s (great breakfasts), the ice cream place in Douglas, Butler, Crane%26#39;s in Fennville, etc.

Vacationed there many times. While Saugatuck has a reputation for being gay-friendly, it isn%26#39;t overtly gay and is a very family-oriented town. Lots of families with kids vacation there and in my opinion are the majority. You might occasionally see a same-gender couple holding hands walking down the street, but that%26#39;s about it.

I think nearly all of the restaurants afre family-friendly. When the kids were little we found it best to dine early to avoid the dinner time crowds. We also used the %26#39;linen tablecloth rule%26#39; figuring restaurants that used them are the kind of places that usually aren%26#39;t asccustomed to having babies as dinner guests.

I just stayed at the Saugatuck Harbor Inn with my two children and had a great time. The pool and Inn are awesome! I just placed my first review of anything, so it should be posted in a couple of days

  • two or three night stay???

My husband and I are staying in Saugatuck at the Bella Vita Spa and Suites in October for our anniversary. Right now we have reservations for Sunday and Monday night, but are wondering if we should go down a day earlier and stay Sat. as well.

We have never been to Saugatuck before and were wondering if two nights is ample time for a little getaway or if three nights is better.

    two or three night stay???

If you%26#39;re as close as Grand Rapids then that really means you%26#39;ll have three full days, which I think would be ample. I don%26#39;t by any means think that three nights would be over doing it, but maybe with two it%26#39;ll leave you wanting, and that%26#39;s a good way to go home.

    two or three night stay???

    I agree with Rono.

Several years ago, we visited the small, but lovely island of Key West for the 1st time and stayed a week... There are only so many times one could go up and down Duval Street! LOL. Although we LOVE Key West, in the future we%26#39;ll only stay 3 days.

It%26#39;s better to leave wanting more than to become bored with your getaway.

Just remember in the ';off-season'; many places are closed on Monday%26#39;s so going down a night early and really taking advantage of everything the town has to offer may make sense in this case...just a thought!

Has anyone stayed at the Brigadoon the first or seconf week of June? If so, how much was your room if you stayed on the first floor?

    Restaurants & Wine Bars???

Still looking for great restaurant ideas, so far I have Everyday People Cafe for dinner and Pumpernickel%26#39;s for breakfast and lunch.

There appear to be 2 winery owned tasting rooms, Fenn ?? and Taber; has anyone been to these and do they serve any wines in addition to their own? Any wine bars in Saugatuck?

    Restaurants %26amp; Wine Bars???

Michigan liquor laws are a bit conservative. Winery tasting rooms can only sample their own wines and wine shops aren%26#39;t allowed to sample at all.

There are 10-15 wineries within an hour%26#39;s drive of Saugatuck, it%26#39;s fun to tour around. Award winning Reislings and other whites do best but the reds are coming along. Tabor Hill winery has an excellent restaurant too.

No wine bars in the area but great selections can be found at Everyday People, Marro%26#39;s, Clearbrook and Butch%26#39;s in Holland.

Other restaurants to consider, Ida Red%26#39;s for breakfast or lunch....Journeyman in Fennville (recently recognized by Gourmet magazine)...Phil%26#39;s in downtown Saugatuck has good food and a great vibe.

    Restaurants %26amp; Wine Bars???

Regarding the Journeyman restaurant. Last year , 2007, I was pretty delighted by its faire...wonderful, delicious, truly excellent food..But alas...it has lost its magic..

Recently they opened a new wine bar and extended the restaurant and the food we ate the last time we were there was not good. They had skimped on the amount of meat on the pizzas, and I ordered over medium eggs for the brunch, but they came back so uncooked that even the whites werent cooked. It was awful. The sourdough toast was burned and the eggs were almost raw. For the price, which is exorbitant, the food isnt worth it. I wont be going there again. I know that the economy is in the toilet right now, but that is no excuse to skimp on the food, especially for such high prices. I will go to Grasscup restaurant near Holland if I need a night out. The food there is always prepared with care.

    Going there Thursday

We are using RLT divers in MN

and traveling there for a 4 day scuba

trip. Any tips are welcome, will post

a review when I come back.

We are leaving out of Grand Portage, MN.

    Going there Thursday

No comments only my wishes for a great trip! I%26#39;ve always wanted to go to Isle Royale. I can%26#39;t wait to read your trip report! Moms

    Going there Thursday

We went to Isle Royale scuba diving through RLT Divers out of Grand Portage, MN.

We took a 2 hr. boat ride there and then enjoyed!

Mostly we were there to scuba dive but we did check out Windigo Lodge and another camp site area with showers and a store.

    Gorgeous time!

    Great ship wreks!

    Pristine wilderness.

    Write with any questions!

Dearborn suggestions - eating? shopping? evening with baby?

My mom, my aunt, and I are going on a girls getaway. We%26#39;ll be spending most of the weekend in Dearborn. We plan to visit Greenfield Village and Henry Ford Museum. Any tips?

    What else should we do?

Any good places to eat (we%26#39;re sort of picky - nothing too exotic)?

Are there any fun malls nearby?

Any other ideas for evening entertainment with a one year old and two 60 year olds?

    Thanks!!!

Dearborn suggestions - eating? shopping? evening with baby?

Museum and Village: depending upon the intensity of your interests, can take as long as one day each. If you plan to do both in the same day, bear in mind that they open at 9:30 a.m. and close at 5:00 p.m. Free parking. Only for occasional special events are they open after 5:00 p.m. There is an IMAX theatre in the Museum. It is open at night.

Restaurants: Many of the usual national chains are in and around Dearborn. There also are a number of local restaurants and local chains that are worth checking out: Olga%26#39;s, Andiamo, Ciao, steak houses, Middle Eastern, Mexican, etc. Some are a 5 to 10 minute drive from downtown Dearborn. In the city itself, Michigan Avenue is the main street and most, but not all, restaurants are on Michigan Avenue (or within a block of it).

There are restaurants in the Fairlane Mall (including a food court) and also on the perimeter of the mall property. There also is a concentration of chains in adjacent Allen Park, east of Southfield Freeway between Outer Drive and Oakwood and on Ford Road, west of Telegraph in Dearborn Heights. Post again with budget and preferred cuisines and we can make specific suggestions.

Other: you might want to check out Henry Ford%26#39;s estate (Fairlane). Tours are offered and the restaurant (closed Saturdays and Sundays) is a good spot for lunch before the tour. www.henryfordestate.org

Shopping. Fairlane is a major mall, but fun may be a stretch as the mall has been struggling for a few years and both Saks and Lord %26amp; Taylor have closed, leaving large vacancies. Two restaurants (Bravo and P.F. Chang%26#39;s) presently are under construction near what was formerly the Sak%26#39;s entrance.

If you don%26#39;t mind driving 30-45 minutes north, the best shopping in the Detroit area is at the Somerset Collection (www.thesomersetcollection.com). About the same driving time northwest of Dearborn on I-96 there also is Novi, MI with the 12 Oaks Mall, Fountain Walk and the Novi Town Center.

Dearborn suggestions - eating? shopping? evening with baby?

    Thanks for all the tips!

We%26#39;ll only be in the area Saturday and part of Sunday, so anything closed on the weekend won%26#39;t be an option.

We like to eat at casual places. Our budget is probably $20 per person. Two of us really like Italian or Mexican. The other one is going to be happiest with standard American fare or pizza.

The shopping ideas you gave me sound great. I%26#39;ll be sure to take them along and check them out!

OK, with the budget and cuisine preferences you mentioned, here are a few recommendations to get you started. All are in or near Dearborn. They have websites so you can check out their menus, prices and photos.

    ITALIAN. (1) Andiamo (more upscale local chain: www.andiamoitalia.com/dearborn); (2) Ciao (www.ciaodearborn.com), also more upscale; (3) Carino%26#39;s (more moderately-price national chain: www.carinosgrill.com); (4) Giovanni%26#39;s (www.giovannisristorante.com); and (5) Vince%26#39;s (www.vincesitalian.com).

Giovanni%26#39;s and Vince%26#39;s are unique, local and non-chain restaurants doing business in their only locations. Both are close to Dearborn, but a bit off the beaten track and both are very popular.

PIZZA. (1) Buddy%26#39;s (www.buddyspizza.com); and (2) PizzaPapalis (www.pizzapapalis.com). Both are very good and both are local chains with branches on Michigan Avenue in Dearborn. These are Chicago deep-dish style pizzas.

MEXICAN. My sole pick in this category is also a little out of the way but not hard to find. It is Taqueria MI Pueblo. It is reasonably-priced, friendly, clean and definitely more authentic Mexican than most others. Taqueria Mi Pueblo is very popular with people who know ';real'; Mexican food (local Mexican community, Ford engineers and executives who have lived and worked in Mexico, etc.) Don%26#39;t worry, the name implies they serve only tacos (but in fact they have a broader menu than most Mexican restaurants) and ';authentic'; implies to some people that it is super hot or spicy; it definitely is neither. Check out their menu at www.mipueblorestaurant.com. Great place for lunch.

BURGERS. Best burgers, fries and onion rings in Dearborn (and many locals would say anywhere) can be found at Miller%26#39;s Bar on Michigan Avenue east of Telegraph. This small, neighborhood bar no frills place is a Dearborn institution and is very popular. It hasn%26#39;t changed in years and features a unique honor system for paying. www.millersbar.com

CHANGE OF PACE. Olga%26#39;s. Freshly-made--in the restaurant--thick, soft and warm pita bread (totally unlike store-bought pita) and a variety of sandwich fillings for the pita make this Michigan-based chain a great place for a moderately-priced lunch or dinner. www.olgaskitchen.com

CHINESE. China Town, in the Fairlane Mall near the J. C. Penny lower entrance offers inexpensivem buffet style Chinese food in a good variety. It is a good place for lunch.

There are lots of other restaurants in the area or within 10-15 minutes, but you aren%26#39;t going to be here long enough to venture too far from Dearborn.

    Hope that this helps.

WOW! Thanks for all the great restaurant ideas!!

You are most welcome. Have a great visit!

Dearborn Hts - Garden City area

Looking for a motel/hotel not to pricy - clean in the Garden city area. On/off Ford road and 24 or 96.

Dearborn Hts - Garden City area

I can%26#39;t think of any hotel/motels in Garden City. You might want to check Canton there are some @ I275/and Ford Rd (near a IKEA---cool place to shop). If you head up Ford Rd, Garden City isn%26#39;t too far (maybe 10-15 min). Also, there is a Motel 8, @ 96 and Middlebelt in Livonia. Again, up Middlebelt Garden City is 10-15 min. There are also, some hotels (nice ones) @ 6 Mile and 275 in Livonia. The ones @ 6 Mile and 275, there are quite a few places to choose from to eat at. Also, there is a small, nice mall right there (Laurel Park Mall). All of these will probably be less than 1/2 hour away from Garden City. I-275---I96 cross in Livonia, Plymouth area.

Any ???%26#39;s you can pm me or ask I will try and find out for you.

  • Shopping along the Red Arrow Highway

My sister from Chicago and I meet at Weko Beach in Bridgeman for some sun then head out along the Red Arrow highway and into New Buffalo to hit the SHOPPING. We are getting a little tired of the same ol%26#39; places. We are not looking for mall type shopping but unique, fun, quaint places to go - maybe North towards St Joe or Benton Harbor. Any Ideas???

Shopping along the Red Arrow Highway

Have you gone to Sawyer Garden Center in Sawyer. Turn off Red Arrow Hwy in Sawyer at the stoplight(the restaurant Soe%26#39;s is at this corner)and go under Interstate 94. The Garden Center is on your left about 1/4 miles past I 94. It has everything under the sun there -- gourmet food, wine, kitchen stuff, lotions, candles, home dec , garden, bird food, plants, fresh fruit and veggies.

Shopping along the Red Arrow Highway

Downtown St. Jo is always fun with a lake view and lots of shops including a real old fashioned oiled floor dime store. Two shops I can recommend are The Little House and The Christmas Tree, both on the outskirts, but nice drives.

    Restaurant, Winery, Spa Recommendations

My friend and I will be spending a weekend in the Traverse City area next month for a ';girls getaway';. We%26#39;ll be staying near the Brys Estate Winery and plan to do some wine tasting there the afternoon we arrive. Any suggestions for other wineries, funky/unique restaurants, etc that are semi-near to where we%26#39;re staying would be appreciated. Also, are there any day spa%26#39;s in the area other than Grand Traverse that are worth checking out? Thanks!

    Restaurant, Winery, Spa Recommendations

There are numerous other wineries, both on Old Mission Peninsula and in nearby Leelanau county... nothing%26#39;s too far... you can get the brochures/maps from the TC Convention %26amp; Visitors Bureau. There%26#39;s a day spa on W. Front Street called %26#39;impres (impressalon.com) and as for unique restaurants ~ how about: Stella (nobody here says Trattoria Stella) in the Grand Traverse Commons area or make an advance reservation for the Chef%26#39;s House.. a very small place on Front St. near downtown... or Hanna, downtown. You should definitely get the mailing from the CVB so you can browse the TC visitors magazine... enjoy

    Restaurant, Winery, Spa Recommendations

I take a girls weekend to this area every year and we love it.

We prefer the wineries on Old Mission because you can visit all of them in a day since they are basically all off the same road- very easy to navigate.

There are 2 new ones this year – Black Star Farms opened a second location here. They have a large winery and Creamery on Leelanau Peninsula. I’ve been to the larger one but have yet to see the new one on Old Mission. If they sell their cheese at this location I would highly recommend purchasing some. The name of the other new one escapes me at the moment.

Here are those others - Peninsula Cellars. It’s an old school house so the history is pretty interesting. It’s the smallest of the wineries but worth seeing. Nice people with very reasonable priced wine - Brys has a wonderful Pinot Noir and the tasting room is beautiful. This is my favorite wine in the area. Their prices are a bit higher then the other wineries but the staff is very helpful here. Chateau Grand Traverse is very large and has an inn on the property and offers tours of the vineyard. Beautiful place as well as good wine at reasonable prices - Chateau Chantal is absolutely one of the prettiest places I have ever seen. It sits up high on a hill with beautiful views of the bay. If you only see one winery on Mission Peninsula this is the one I would recommend. Go to www.chateauchantal.com to check it out. Not my favorite wine but it’s a must see whenever we are in the area. Then there is Bowers Harbor. I love this place as well. It’s like going to visit a friend. They had 2 big friendly dogs (mascots) roaming the area. Copper and Otis both of whom have wines made for them. Otis has passed away and a new dog has been adopted and a new wine is in the making in honor of him. Cooper is a Burmese Mountain Dog that walks around the grounds as if he knows he is pretty. Or you are lucky if I let you pet me. LOL I find it funny we drink “dog wine” but it is very good. They also sell really good Cherry Salsa. Sounds odd but it’s really good!

We enjoy Amical for lunch but if you search this forum you will fine many recommendations for good restaurants in the area. We also enjoy going to the top of Park Place Hotel for Cosmos. Have fun! I go in 9 days and can’t wait!

The Brys Estate Winery is on Old Mission Peninsula and there are plenty of wineries within a 10 minute drive. Chateau Chantal is to the north and has one of the most beautiful settings, you can easily see the Grand Traverse Bay on both sides. They also have a bed %26amp; breakfast there so they might offer some spa services. Blackstar Farms has a winery now on Old Mission which I haven%26#39;t been to but their location on Leelanau Peninsula was gorgeous so I can imagine it%26#39;s probably beautiful on Old Mission as well. They are one of the few wineries that charge for tastings though. Chateau Grand Traverse is nice and has some nice wines too. Peninsula Cellars is an old schoolhouse without a view but they have some great wines (I bought 2 bottles there on 10/04/08)and you get 6 free tastings. 2 Lads is a new winery that is sold out of everything but Chardonnay so that%26#39;s all they have for tasting. There will be signs for all the wineries as you travel on M37 so just watch for them. Here is a link to the wineries of Old Mission: http://www.wineriesofoldmission.com/ and if you feel like driving here is the link for Leelanau Peninsula http://www.lpwines.com. Have fun!

Looking for a hotel and restaurant for a Sunday night

We need to stay in Manistee on Sunday night, October 19th. From what the outfitter told us and from reading the reviews on trip advisor it seems the Microtel would be a fine place to stay.

What about eating dinner? No need for fancy, just good.

Can%26#39;t wait for some of that great salmon and steelhead fishing on Monday the 20th!!!

    This weekend October 11/12

Hi, We will be in Holland MI this weekend. I am looking for a (non chain) restaurant recommendation for Saturday night. I am looking for more casual dining or something that would allow jeans/khakis and a polo or sweater.

Additionally, I would love to come home with Traverse City pie company pie and hope I do not need to drive to Grand Rapids to pick it up. Are any of their cherry pies sold at D %26amp; W?

Any other suggestions about neat activities to see or do are welcome. I think we will spend part of the time in Douglas/Sa. but I am not too interested in dining in that area.

    This weekend October 11/12

I believe Grand Traverse Pie Co. has a location in Muskegon. Crane%26#39;s Orchards in Fennville sells excellent pies also.

Good Holland dining options include Butch%26#39;s, City Vu, New Holland Brewing %26amp; Alpen Rose, all located downtown.

    This weekend October 11/12

I agree with Lakeeffects suggestion of Crane%26#39;s. They are a couple of miles east on M 89/Fennville exit off I 196, you%26#39;ll go right past that exit.

In addition to the the other suggestions I%26#39;ve always liked Boatwerks and the Piper but I%26#39;m not sure either are open. Oh also we like Perredi%26#39;s (Iknow that%26#39;s not spelled right) for Italian food, located at Washington Square.

Best hotel for wedding night? Honeymoon suite?

Does anyone know of a really nice honeymoon suite in Auburn Hills?

We%26#39;re looking for things like... whirpool tub/hot tub in room, complimentary wine, flowers, late check-out, in-bed breakfast...

    ???

Best hotel for wedding night? Honeymoon suite?

I work in Auburn Hills and I%26#39;m trying to think of something to suit your needs. There is the Marriot on Centerpointe Parkway, but that may actually be located in Pontiac. There are a ton of hotels on Opdyke like the Hyatt Place and Crown Plaza......I%26#39;m not sure if they can accomadate the needs you want.

Would Birmingham to be far to go? What about the Townsend? Also, there is the Royal Park in Rochester.

Best hotel for wedding night? Honeymoon suite?

Rochester is only a 5 minute drive from Auburn Hills and the Royal Park Hotel (http://www.royalparkhotel.net/) would be a wonderful choice. If you are looking for luxury in the area this is it. Most of the other hotel options are your standard chain hotels catering to the weekly business traveler.

Another option would be the Cobblestone Manor B%26amp;B (http://www.cobblestonemanor.com/) just off of University Drive by Oakland University

My daughter actually honeymooned at the Royal Park in Rochester and liked it very much. (President Bush actually stayed at this hotel a while back - it is top of the line.)

I have also heard good things about the Townsend. A couple other nice options that are in the Troy area would be the Troy Hilton, Somerset Inn or Troy Marriott. I have seen the honeymoon suite at the Hilton and it is very nice. (We live in Rochester and actually reserved a block of rooms for the wedding guests at the Troy Hilton - it%26#39;s a little less pricey than the Royal Park.) The Hilton also has Charley%26#39;s Crab Restuarant in it which is a very romantic restaurant. I actually like that restaurant better than anywhere in the vicinity for special events, special occasions.

I imagine your wedding has come and gone but thought I would post to benefit others doing any searches.

  • Wineries open in Fall?

Hi, interested in planning a trip in the next few weeks, maybe even into early November. Maybe a silly question, but are the wineries open year round?

    Thanks in advance!

    Wineries open in Fall?

Yes... and it should be a beautiful time to visit the Old Mission %26amp; Leelanau Peninsulas.

    Wineries open in Fall?

It is absolutely wonderful on the peninsula in October. We went up the last couple years and really enjoyed the crisp air and beautiful fall colors.

The wineries are all open and in full swing. The hours vary and most are closed by 5pm.

A couple years ago we stayed at the ';Cherry Tree Inn';. It is right on Grand Traverse Bay and is a great place to stay.

    Just an FYI.... Enjoy!

I go to Old Mission for the wineries every year in October. It’s a beautiful time of year for that area but the wineries can also be very busy if you go on a weekend. The crowds don’t really bother me and we are always able to eventually get our tasting in but you may have fewer crowds in November or during the week in October. Have fun!

I just was at some of the Old Mission wineries on 10/04/08 and most were open till 6pm that day. They were also packed, we actually pulled into Chateau Grand Traverse and pulled back out because it was so busy and we did have to wait in line for a tasting at the others. Usually we go in September and they aren%26#39;t very busy. The colors weren%26#39;t prime yet but in a week or 2 they will be.

Here is a link to the wineries in Northwest Michigan www.michiganwines.com/page.php?menu_id=24

I%26#39;m sure they all give hours and events.

    Hope you enjoy.

Thank you very much! I will look into everyone%26#39;s suggestions. We plan on heading up there this Friday.

  • Benton Harbor/St. Joes or Saugatuck/Douglas

I am trying to decide whether 2 couples should spend a weekend in Benton Harbor/St. Joes or in Saugatuck/Douglas. We have been to Saugatuck/Douglas before and had a great time. Is there the same kind of feel in St. Joes? Are there alot of shops in the downtown area? We will be there October 31 through November 2. I know that we will be missing the Halloween parade in Douglas which we attended last year (it was very entertaining). Any thoughts would be helpful.

    Benton Harbor/St. Joes or Saugatuck/Douglas

I would think Saugatuck/Douglas would still be the pick.

    Benton Harbor/St. Joes or Saugatuck/Douglas

If you choose to stay in Saugatuk again -- you could always drive down to St Joseph on Blue Star highway for the day on Saturday. That way you could get a feel for both areas. There are less shops in St Joe -- but a great view of the lake and lighthouse. As you already know you can not see the lake from Saugatuk.

    TravDreamer,

I%26#39;m looking for a safe hotel, inespensive to spend a couple o nights in Saug. next weekend. Any ideas? I looked at Beachways Resort on-line-seems ok.

    Nancy

Rono is your man for this info. I am not as familiar with lodging options in Saugatuk. PM him if he does not catch this post. Hope you have a great weekend. I love Saugatuk -- especially in the Fall. It is raining on this side of the state today -- so hope it clears up for the weekend.

    Lunch spot in Holland

My parents are visiting next week from out of state and we are looking for a good lunch restaurant in Holland. We are meeting a former workmate of my mom%26#39;s who will be driving from a couple hours north. Anyone have a good reccomendation? I have eaten at Alpen Rose and had a bad experience, Also the pub type place on the main street of downtown -- tho I can%26#39;t remember the name -- and thought it was good.

Also is the farmers market still happening on Wednesdays downtown? If not, any other ideas for something to do after lunch that would not be expensive?

    Lunch spot in Holland

Hi TD, it could have been 8th St. Grill or Butch%26#39;s both are on 8th. Butch%26#39;s serves lunch in the back half of the building. I think there is also a brewpub but I don%26#39;t know the name. According to my wife Holland%26#39;s Farmers Market is wonderful and much better than SH%26#39;s but I don%26#39;t know if it is still going, sorry.

    Lunch spot in Holland

Thanks Rono, I bet we ate at the 8th st grill last time. What do you suggest new for this time?

Cider Mills/Apple Farms suggestions needed: Rochester Hills

Yes, these were very helpful, U! Thank you so much. One of our kids just moved to this area, and so we must continue the fall tradition of visiting the Apple Farm :) !! Time for new ones, instead of Baynes and Leaman%26#39;s! I still miss the old Bintz%26#39;s!

Yates has always been a great little cider mill in Rochester Hills. It is not a large production cider mill but it is nestled along the river with the typical cider mill food fare and little extras like bagged apples, gourds, pony rides, and a petting farm. If you are looking for something larger with hayrides, corn mazes, pick-your own pumpkins, raspberries, etc. then you will have to head farther northeast towards the Romeo area. HEre are a couple of the popular ones in that area:

    Blake farms – 2 locations (Armada) – http://www.blakefarms.com/

    Westview Orchards (Romeo) – http://www.westvieworchards.com/

Miller’s Big Red Apple Orchard (Washington) – http://www.millers-bigred.com/index.htm

We like Yates too. There is a very pleasant walking trail there as well.

I highly recommend either Blake%26#39;s or Yates. Blake%26#39;s has everything - pick your own pumpkin, pick apples, hayrides, kids areas and they make an apple cobbler sundae type treat. Some consider Yates to have the best tasting cider and they were an actual mill with the large running wheel and views to see how the cider is made. They sell apples and Michigan fudge and you are close to the Clinton river and trails that parallel it. They are both unique and worth a look.

Another one closer to Royal Oak is the Franklin Cider Mill. I don%26#39;t know much about this one but have relatives that really enjoy it.

Thanks for your suggestions. We have been to the Franklin Cider Mill, it is very nice, but so very crowded in a small area. We will be trying Yates for sure, and a couple others!

Yates Cider Mill has always been my favorite growing up. It%26#39;s just perfect in my opinion. Cider, donuts, apples, little trail to walk, river, pumpkins, pony rides for the kids (I think the ponies are only on the weekend), Mackinac Island Fudge, apples and of course, lots %26amp; lots of bees.

I also like Franklin Cider Mill, not a whole lot to do except drink cider and eat donuts, but our daughter loves to feed the ducks there. They have a little market set up too.. assorted baked goods, honey, pumpkins, apples, etc.

    Enjoy!

Can you recommend an inexpensive hotel/motel that would provide safe nights for women? We were thinking of Beachways Resort. Thanks.

thanks for your reply, need not be exclusive.

Just not being familiar with the area, don%26#39;t want to end up in a bad place. Using TA as a guide of course.

    Thanks.

We just stayed at Hunter%26#39;s Lodge and really liked it. It%26#39;s very reasonable and felt safe. (You can go to my profile and read my review or look under specialty lodging in hotels.)

I think most hotels/motels in the area should be pretty safe. It%26#39;s a very nice town.

Beachway Resort is on the way to Oval Beach so I%26#39;ve passed it often. It looks like it might have been built in the 1940%26#39;s or 50%26#39;s. I%26#39;ve never been inside, so I can%26#39;t comment on it, but the area seems as safe as any in Saugatuck, which is an artsy resort town, so I think you%26#39;ll be just fine.

Deer Creek B%26amp;B and Cottages is another nice affordable option.

The Hampton Inn in South Haven, about 15 minutes south, often has good rates and has consistently good reviews. It%26#39;s located right off the interstate across from the Walmart and near several other chain hotels and restaurants so it%26#39;s not located in the most quaint area but the area seemed just fine otherwise.

  • Which One? Hooten Inn or The Hunter's Lodge???

    Greetings!

I%26#39;m having a terrible time making a decision between these two facilities. We will be in Saugatuck for just one night, need to go inexpensively on a room, and would like something interesting/comfy/quaint as compared to Super 8 rooms. I%26#39;ve gotten good responses from the owners when I emailed about these two places %26amp; the rates are reasonable. So how do I choose??? Any insight to these hotels would be very helpful! (or anything else in Douglas/Saugatuck that would be similar in price *wink*)

Which One? Hooten Inn or The Hunter's Lodge???

They are both on Blue Star Hwy, Hooten Inn is just in the city limits I think, you could, if you%26#39;re energetic, walk to town. Hunter%26#39;s Lodge is south of town, I%26#39;d guess two maybe three miles. When you plan on coming makes a difference as to other suggestions.

Which One? Hooten Inn or The Hunter's Lodge???

Thanks for your prompt reply, Rono. We%26#39;ll be there September 5th. I appreciate the info on the location too. I knew both of them were on the highway, but wasn%26#39;t sure of the distance to town, although distance doesn%26#39;t really matter to us. We%26#39;ll be driving from KS then heading to Chicago after our stay in Saugatuck.

We don%26#39;t require anything fancy...we%26#39;re really trying to do this trip on a budget! (hah...since we%26#39;ll be spending so much on gas ;o) I like the looks of both of these places. The Hunter%26#39;s Lodge looks like a lovely location in the trees and that intrigues me. But I also like the fun look of the Hooten Inn. Neither are the regular economy hotels that I usually stay at, and that%26#39;s a good thing.

    Interesting...comfy...quaint...unique....that%26#39;s what I like!

What have you decided to stay at? Hunter%26#39;s Lodge or Hooeten Inn? How did you think about your choice?

    Thank you.

I just posted a review of Hunter%26#39;s Lodge. It was very nice!

    South Haven Vacation Rental

We are looking for a 5 bedroom vacation rental in mid June. Has anybody any advice? We need a pool and prefer to be close to South Haven%26#39;s centre.

    Thanks in Advance

    South Haven Vacation Rental

    Hello aeh101,

I am not familiar with rentals in South Haven but here is a web site that list Vacation Rentals By Owners

    http://www.vrbo.com/

    South Haven Vacation Rental

I agree with Yooperbacker. Also take a look at Southhaven.org and the accommodation listings there. There are a couple of vacation rental brokers there like Shores. If you come up with a house let me know and I%26#39;ll tell you what I know about it.

i%26#39;ve never done the by owner but lots of folks swear by it...

you can go to the south haven web site southhaven.org and they list all the folks who rent in the town....as rono mentions shores is one that many including me have used and been satisfied with.

For pools you are limited in my experience...i thought the biggest condos were 3 br....maybe you could use 2....ck with the renter and good luck!

We are thinking of driving up the west coast of Michigan (from Chicago) this weekend - Sunday %26amp; Monday (10/12 %26amp; 10/13). Interested in viewing fall colors and Lake Michigan and maybe visit a winery or two.

Looking for suggestions concerning how far north we will need to go to see ';color,'; favorite routes, ';leafpeeping'; traffic, favorite wineries, places to stay, especially on Lake Michigan.

    Thanks

    sleep and fly in dtw

anyone used this lately ? wich hotel is a good, safe one and not too expensive ?

    sleep and fly in dtw

I know there are a lot of discussions on this board about which is the best park and fly. I always use the Crowne Plaza, its a nice hotel and it very safe and easy to use.

check out this link for further suggestions.

    tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g42139-i475-k21984…

    sleep and fly in dtw

We live about four hours North of DTW, so almost anytime we fly out of there we use a sleep %26amp; fly. We%26#39;ve used these three (in order of preference).

    1) Courtyard by Marriott

    2) Hilton Garden Inn

    3)LaQuinta

I like La Quinta. They usually run a $100 special that includes the room and parking for a week. The rooms are nice.

I%26#39;ve checked into this as well. A friend just stayed at the Courtyard and was very happy. The ones I checked on were LaQuinta, Baymont Inn, Courtyard, Four Points, Crowne Plaza and Comfort Inn. Prices vary, so it just depends on how much you want to spend. Some will keep your car for up to 7 days but additional days are a lot (between $5 and $20 per day). Since we need to leave the car 11 days, that additional charge will be an important factor. Call the property directly, and when I called a month ago they didn%26#39;t have 2009 pricing available.

    meeting room

I am driving down from the UP to meet an international visitor in Bay City and would like to find a quiet meeting room for 2 with some food. Any ideas.

    meeting room

The Doubletree is a nice place. I%26#39;m not sure what you mean by meeting room. I know that the Bay Valley Resort (I-75 at M-84) has rooms available for job interviews, so maybe that would suit your needs. If you just need a restaurant were you can visit, there are many in Bay City. One on the river is very nice, just North off M-25 on the East side of the river, not too far from the Doubletree. There is the Antique Mall and some quaint shops in the area as well.

  • Know anything about Frankenmuth B&B's??

My husband and I are planning a trip to Frankenmuth/Birch Run this fall. We have been to this area several times before, however this time we are having a great deal of difficulty finding a hotel room at an affordable rate. We are considering a B%26amp;B. Has anyone stayed at a B%26amp;B in Frankenmuth before???

    Know anything about Frankenmuth B%26amp;B's??

Sign up for the ';Perks Club'; at Bavarian Inn. Costs $10 to sign up for a year, cancels if you don%26#39;t renew. You get coupons etc through the club AND MAJOR discounts on Bavarian Inn. We stayed in a King room for $50 through this program. 5 pools and games, etc. Great deal. go to bavarian Inn website for Perks Club details

    Know anything about Frankenmuth B%26amp;B's??

On the Perks Club, did you get the discount on your first stay? If I am going in 3 weeks, would I have time to sign up now and get the discount on that trip?

Did you check out the Drury Inn? It%26#39;s a very small hotel chain, and they have perks that make it a very good deal. It%26#39;s close to everything. B%26amp;B might be a good option.

I tried to find a B%26amp;B in Frankenmuth through the internet, but could only get one to come up on anywho.com when I searched the business section.

I%26#39;m sure there are more. Try calling the Chamber of Commerce in %26#39;Muth.

There is a B%26amp;B listed on their lodging page. Birch Run also has a B%26amp;B. Enjoy your trip!!

    Nice restaurant near the airport?

We%26#39;re staying at the Westin at the airport for one night, and I wondered if anyone could suggest good places to eat nearby. I%26#39;m not even sure where the airport is, how far away from Detroit, etc. We would like to have a nice dinner (one option is the hotel restaurant, but we%26#39;d like to get others) somewhere that%26#39;s not a chain. We%26#39;ll have our car. Thanks for any suggestions!

    Nice restaurant near the airport?

There is not much right by the airport. I believe there is an Italian place on Merriman just north of the airport but have never eaten there.

Go to google and enter ';restaurants near DTW'; as your search and it will show you what is nearby, often with reviews.

    Nice restaurant near the airport?

The Italian place on Merriman is called Leonardo%26#39;s and it is a good family style restaurant. Can you give a few more specfics on what you are looking for...just a good meal or an upscale atmosphere, what type of cuisine, will you have a car, etc.

The airport is NOT in Detroit, but about 30 minutes drive from downtown, if traffic isn%26#39;t heavy. The airport actually is closer to Dearborn (maybe 12-15 minutes) and to Ann Arbor (maybe 20-25 minutes) and a number of other suburbs than it is to Detroit.

There are several nice restaurants in Dearborn and a lot in Ann Arbor.

Thanks to all who responded. We ended up eating at Demo, the hotel restaurant--a bit expensive but overall good. The hotel is gorgeous. I wanted to wander into the airport terminal while my husband attends a conference today, but one thing the hotel neglects to tell you is that they only give you a pass into the terminal during your stay: If you check out first, you%26#39;re out of luck. Luckily this hotel has plenty of lounging areas.

What's is like in early November?

Saugatuck was recommended by a friend for early spring/summer time. However, my husband and I are looking for a getaway now in early November. Any opinions?

What's is like in early November?

Speaking to you from Saugatuck in mid-October where the temps. are in the high 70%26#39;s low 80%26#39;s today (over 20 degrees warmer than average), it%26#39;s getting harder to predict what%26#39;s to come. The leaves are changing and really beautiful right now and I think should be at their peak next weekend (?)

Early November is a beautiful time in Saugatuck, imho, and is a great time to visit. If you are coming on the weekend, most of the shops and restaurants remain open but are a little bit more scarce during the weekdays especially the beginning of the week.

Regardless, there is plenty to do, the weather is beautiful and again, it%26#39;s a great time to visit.

I know this is late in the year to be thinking of ';beach'; rentals but my husband and I are considering taking our girls (8 and 17) up to south haven for the fall break weekend. We would like to rent a cottage on the beach. Any suggestions? We have never been to the Michigan side of Lake Michigan and aren%26#39;t familiar with South Haven but got a great recommendation from friends.

need help with a beach rental

i%26#39;ve used michi-mona mac...small but clean and well equiped cottages right on the beach run by nice folks...there are other condos on the beach you can ck out at the south haven web site...

it%26#39;s not at all late in the year...it%26#39;s lovely and quieter up there then..and the beach is a hoot at any time...great kite flying weather now!! and sometimes still warm enough for some beach chairing!!

i tend to stay off the beach to save money and then just park myself at one of the major beaches or packard park on the north side to enjoy the shore.

need help with a beach rental

thanks flizzer. I have emailed michi-mona-mac but haven%26#39;t received a response. Also, are you familiar with a place further north on the beach (greyish blue 2 story home with 5 or 6 cottages on the beach) owned by a lady named Sylvia? I am trying to get her contact information. Was told by a friend that it is a lovely place but she doesn%26#39;t advertise and the friend didn%26#39;t have the contact info.

Doesn%26#39;t ring a bell but I%26#39;ll drive out Northshore on the way home and see if I see anything fitting the description.

Thanks Rono. I did hear back from Kathy at Michi-Mona-Mac and she has a ';yardside'; unit available for the 23-26 of October. Sounds good, good price at $135 per night. I emailed her back because am not sure what ';yardside'; means. I know flizzer said good things about michi-mona-mac, what does anyone else think?

they%26#39;re not fancy but clean and well run!!

you really can%26#39;t go wrong on the north shore in my opinion....but for me it%26#39;s just about that big blue water...and i%26#39;m into clean but small and not fancy is aok with me...

good luck in your hunting!! and let us know how it goes!

I%26#39;ve never noticed them before. I didn%26#39;t see them from the road, but we were out on the lake yesterday and sure enough just north of MMM there are cottages very similar looking to MMM. The color was right and the address given above fits.

BTW it%26#39;s nearly 80 here today, the lake is flat, the leaves are turning, and the sun is shining.

Hey Rono, thanks. I emailed Griff%26#39;s Inn and haven%26#39;t heard back to I%26#39;m going to book MMM for the weekend of the 25th and we%26#39;ll check out the other place when we%26#39;re up there!

It%26#39;s gorgeous here in Indy today also. We have a little jet boat that we take out sometimes and it was nice today. Don%26#39;t think we%26#39;ll bring it up to the ';big water'; though!

    Douglas/Saugatuck Trip Report

Thanks to some great suggestions, my husband and I had a really fun time in the Saugatuck are this weekend.

Coming from Chicago, we were a bit early for check in time at the Pines Motorlodge so we stopped at Crane%26#39;s Orchards on the way in. This was Friday afternoon so it was extremely un-crowded (as compared to the crowds we saw when we drove by on Saturday). We walked among the trees and the weather was lovely.

Arriving at the Pines, we could tell that the places was meticulously clean and just a really nice place for the price ($99/night). It is wonderfully located just off the road leading into the main part of Douglas and a nice walking distance to Saugatuck, if you want the exercise. The bed was cushy and the amenities were retro/tiki/cuba. Every room has adirondak chairs out front, mini-fridge and microwave. There is a lovely little seating room where they serve a super basic breakfast in the morning (bagels, muffins, fruit, juice and coffee). The only down side was the thin walls, which can impact a light sleeper if the folks next door have loud nighttime exploits... if you know what I mean.

While in the area, we ate some really great food. Everyday People Cafe was consistently crowded and I didn%26#39;t make reservations so we went to the Wild Dog Grill in Douglas. All their food is fresh and delish. They make their salad dressings in house and they are phenomenal. I had a little blue cheese steak with fresh veggies and some kind of awesome potatoes. This is a great spot to head to for some tasty food and nice portions.

That night, we went to go bowling at Lakeview Lanes in Douglas. What a nice bowling alley! Nice bar and foods and the actual alley was actually really nice. I have never been to a stylish bowling alley before.

Saturday breakfast was spent at Pumpernickel%26#39;s in Saugatuck. Their cinnamon rolls are beyond amazing and their breakfasts are homey and yummy.

After breakfast, we took the trek to the top of Mt Baldhead (282 steps). It was way harder than I thought it would be and I am so sore today. However, it is a nice way to exercise and the view at the top is great.

After we drove around the countryside to look at the fall colors (maybe 10-20% to peak right now?) so we stopped at Rye in Fennville for lunch. Oh my goodness... their pizza is sooooo good. Perfect crust and really yummy ingredients. I had blue cheese and onion on mine. Highly recommended.

    One little highlight for those not into crazy nightlife is a coffee house called Respite in Douglas. On Friday and Saturday nights there is music played a sung by the nice retired man who owns the shop along with a friend of his. They play old Johnny Cash songs and things along those lines. It is a nice slow paced place with great music and really friendly people. Plus, they had some awesome coffee called Blueberry Cinnamon Crumble. It was an incredible ';flavor of the day.';

We also spent some time walking around Saugatuck which is pretty touristy but a sweet tiny town all the same.

My husband and I will be back!

    Douglas/Saugatuck Trip Report

Glad you had a good time. I was in Saugatuck and Douglas Friday night looking for dinner. Every place we went had a line, it was crazy busy for this time of year.

    Douglas/Saugatuck Trip Report

Douglas was having ';Fall into Douglas'; on Friday so everything (shops, galleries, etc) was open late, which I assume brought more people than normal. Luckily, we were really hungry about a quarter after 5 and so arrived at the Wild Dog while there was plenty of room.

  • St. Joe Stay in Oct (from Brahmama's Train Trip)

Just a quick shout out to thank those of you who helped with ideas and suggestions for our short 3 night stay in St. Joe.

Of course, there is one in particular (and you know who you are!) that I have to thank in detail.

As we were planning our stay and looking for a likely place (coming in on the train)I received email from a person who not only checked out the cottage we ultimately rented, but met us at the train to take us there!

The area behind the train is in the process of a massive construction site and it would have been very difficult to wheel our luggage through this. In the dark!

We thoroughly enjoyed sharing pizza and conversation and were blown away by the

thoughtfulness and kindness of a fellow Trip Advisor who certainly went the extra mile.

Being in Michigan again, even for this short time, was lovely, and yes, we did find apples to bring home!

    Thank you, thank you.

    Apple Orchard/Cider Mill

Looking for a nearby apple orchard/cider mill to take son to next weekend when we visit him at Kalamazoo College. Would love to pick own apples, maybe do a hayride.

    Apple Orchard/Cider Mill

Hopefully a local can answer your quesion, but if you don%26#39;t get a reply check out this website that lists orchards etc. Look for the Michigan section.

    Apple Orchard/Cider Mill

Being a native of Kzoo, I am not sure where there is an apple orchard/cider mill. ut, about 45 minutes northeast of Kalamazoo, just south of Hastings, is Cotants, which does have an apple orchard and cider mill - very good place to go. Its on m-37.

My favorite orchard is Gull Meadow Farms, which is on Gull Road about 4 or 5 miles east of Sprinkle Road. They have picked or u-pick apples and pumpkins, cider, wonderful fresh-made donuts, a wagon ride, a corn maze and lots of other activities.

I%26#39;ve been to other orchards in the area, and nothing else even comes close!

I%26#39;ll second the gull meadow farms! We were just there and its great!

Any restaurants open on Christmas Day?

Do you know if any Ann Arbor area restaurants will be open on Christmas Day?

Any restaurants open on Christmas Day?

Most will have a special christmas meal and will be open. Several have a Christmas brunch. You will have no problems.

Any restaurants open on Christmas Day?

Chinese restaurants are usually a good bet to be open on Christmas Day.

Which restaurants? I would like to call for reservations...

I would call any that you might be interested in to check with them. It has been my experience that most restaurants close on Christmas Day. (Which is very understandable.)

I agree that your best bet might be Chinese.

Can anyone give advice on parking for MSU football game?

We are going to the game this Saturday, October 4th. It will be our first time atending a game. Our friends, who are season ticket holders and driving separately, have a parking pass so can%26#39;t really advise on where to park.

We will be arriving around 10:00. Is public parking on campus usually readliy available that far in advance of the game? Any suggestions of specific places (on or off campus) that are good to park? We got the tickets for free so paying to park is not a problem. If we could park off campus in the vicinity of Harrison and Trowbridge, it would be convenient for our friends to pick us up on their way to their parking.

Can anyone give advice on parking for MSU football game?

I do wish I could help but, alas, I can%26#39;t. I grew up in EL and graduated from State. We always rode bikes to the games or parked downtown then walked through the prettiest part of campus, across the river to the stadium. I just wante to say HAVE A GREAT TIME! The games are so much fun as is the parade leading into the stadium. My 9th grader hopes to attend State in 4 years then I too shall be an MSU MOM! Have fun! Moms

Can anyone give advice on parking for MSU football game?

Sorry I didn%26#39;t get to your question in time for the game. I hope you had a good time. The Iowa game on the 4th was a great game!

I thought, however, I would post an answer to your question in case anyone else had the same question for upcoming games.

I always do the following and have never had a problem with traffic or lack of parking.

Take I-496 to the Pennsylvania/Cedar/Larch St. exit. If coming Westbound on I-496, turn left onto Pennsylvania. If coming Eastbound, turn right onto Pennsylvania. Take Pennsylvania to Mt. Hope Rd. (Marathon gas station on corner). Turn left on Mt. Hope Rd. Follow Mt. Hope Rd., as it leaves Lansing and crosses into East Lansing. Stay on Mt. Hope until you get to Farm Lane and you will see the signs for the commuter lot and parking (on your left).

There is usually plenty of parking in the commuter lot at Mt. Hope and Farm Lane or in the fields across the street right up to game time. Parking is free and the stadium shuttle will pick you up in the lot.

There is construction on Farm Ln through 2009 but it has had no effect on the parking lots or the shuttle. The buses now have a special lane on Hagadorn and go ahead of traffic thanks to the traffic police.

The stadium shuttle costs $3.00/pp for a round trip ticket. You buy the tickets at the booths set up in the lot. If it is a nice day, you can also walk but it is about a 25-30 minute walk from the lot and has become a lot more difficult with Farm Ln being shut down for construction. Until Farm Ln has been reopened, I would take the bus.

If you come right before the game starts, the commuter lot may be full but you can make park at the MSU pavillion or in the fields right across the street from the commuter lot.

Tailgating is also allowed at the commuter lot. The best part about parking in the commuter lot is after the game there are no traffic backups in leaving and getting back to the freeway. The buses have a special dedicated lane going back to the parking lot after the game.

The biggest drawback is you may have to wait in a line to board the shuttle buses after the game but it is usually not a terribly long wait. The shuttle buses board where they let you off (East side of Stadiumm).

    Go State!

  • Good vacation spot for early May

Hi there! I lived in MI all my life but have never once travelled in MI. We want our next trip to be local, cheap, and relaxing... but not completely boring.

I%26#39;m seeking something along Lake Michigan, a place that has a variety of things to do but also makes it easy to relax. All our recent vacations have been jam packed so I promised we%26#39;d relax on the next one. I%26#39;m not super into Historical stuff, so I don%26#39;t think I%26#39;d enjoy a place like Mackinaw Island that much.

We%26#39;d love to stay somewhere that is actually on the lake, like a cabin or something, but I%26#39;ve never done anything but hotels so would need suggestions there as well :)

We are planning ahead for our 2nd anniversary in May 2009. I know I%26#39;m starting early, but it%26#39;s because I seriously do not know where to go at all! Your help and suggestions are much appreciated :)

btw- if anyone thinks it%26#39;s too cold in May to go to Lake Michigan, please let me know! I%26#39;m not looking to swim of course, but would maybe like to do a dinner cruise or a boat tour or something. If May is too cold to sit outside or go on a boat, we might go further south for this trip. I don%26#39;t know what the weather is like on that side of the state.

Good vacation spot for early May

I think it would be too cold. Average temps for Ludington (just to pick a spot) are 38-63 for May 1st going up to 47-74 for May 31st. Last year in mid-May a friend tried to have an evening get together on her screened back porch because her house is really small. After the first hour we all crammed into her house because we were freezing. That was in metro Detroit and it%26#39;s usually colder outside the city. Also most of the touristy stuff doesn%26#39;t really get going until you get close to Memorial Day.

Good vacation spot for early May

Thanks for the reply! I almost forgot to come back and check. I guess I%26#39;m going down south for May but gonna find a place within driving distance of Detroit (I%26#39;d say no more than 5 hours). If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know, otherwise I%26#39;ll try the other State forums.

  • How can I keep the blankets on my baby?
  • Smoking in DTW

Does anyone know if smoking is still allowed in Fox%26#39;s Sports Bar in the airport? Thanks in advance.

    Smoking in DTW

    yes

    Smoking in DTW

    Thank you so much!

There is also a bar out in the C concourse that allows it but I can%26#39;t remember the name. The main (center) NW Worldclub also has a smoking room if you are a member.

Great. Thanks for all your help. I have to change planes in Detroit and don%26#39;t want to have to wear a patch if I don%26#39;t have to. :-)

just saying HI, thought I recognized you from Playa posts! So there is a few of us smokers left...

    Trip Report (Lake Superior)

    27. July: So we cross the Mackinaw Bridge and become Yoopers for two days. First we visit the Soo Locks at Seault Ste. Marie. We%26#39;re in luck, a ship is just about to go through the locks. What an amazing structure the locks are, what a testimony to human engineering! We%26#39;ve seen boats going through the locks in the Great Glen in Scotland but that palls in comparison. Wow! Some sight! On the way back to the car we have an ice cream. I get my first taste of Moose something or other (can%26#39;t remember, what a shame because it was delicious: vanilla ice cream with peanut butter bits, yumm!). We get onto the road to Paradise. (Love the name, pity we never made it to Hell...) and make it to Saunder%26#39;s Sunrise Cabins (about 2 miles outside Paradise) and I don%26#39;t know what to make of it. A row of six cabins, each painted in different colours, each colour peeling off.... We get the key to our cabin and have a look around. My first comment ';Well, I guess they don%26#39;t do doors around here';. There are NO doors at the bedrooms, just curtains. Sorry, hubby, no hanky-panky tonight or tomorrow night, after all, we%26#39;re not on our own... Mercifully, the bathroom has a solid door. And there is a cooker (two rings, gas) and a comfy sofa and a table and chairs. The cabin grows on us. It is literally about 5 meters from the lake shore. Fine soft sand just outside the back door. Lake Superior within hand%26#39;s reach. We love it. We go and have dinner in The Little Falls Inn Restaurant in Paradise. Great place! Hubby has whitefish for the first time and loves it. The staff in the restaurant are extremely friendly. We go back to the cabin for wine and beer and long chats.

We have set the alarm clock for 5.30. We get up to watch the sun rise over Lake Superior. It is a bit cloudy but the sunrise is still spectacular. Not a soul moving around, we stand and gape and enjoy. There is no such place as Ireland, it has disappeared, it doesn%26#39;t exist. All that exists is this very still place with the sun rising over this immense spread of water. Eventually we go inside and since we%26#39;re up anyway we have a fry-up and coffee. Then back to bed for a few hours!

    28. July: In the morning we drive up to Whitefish Point. And here we get a true impression of Lake Superior. It is vast. It is huge. It is incredible. I grew up in Northern Germany with the Baltic Sea and the North Sea at my fingertips. I know water. But I have never seen anything like this. I stand in awe at this vast expanse of water. It is just beyond my understanding. I love it but yet I fear it. I respect it. All of us are awed. There are the most incredible twisted tree trunks on the shore thrown up by fearsome gales. This is a coast not to be messed with! Susan and I hunt for agates and find some lovely stones. Damian is walking along the shore and I can see him watching the water, mesmerized. This is one of my overwhelming impressions of the whole trip: standing at the shore of the largest inland lake of the world and I am so tiny in comparison! I don%26#39;t matter, what matters is this immense sheet of water and the little waves which can whip up in no time to huge waves. Lake Superior, you can be kind and cruel at the same time.

We visit the Shipwreck Museum. I think it%26#39;s $12 per person admission. Money well spent. The museum is beautifully arranged and laid out. Of course the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald features largely. We know the song well. We read up on the different shipwrecks and I%26#39;m really absorbed by all these different stories. But of course the story of raising the bell of the Edmund Fitzgerald really gets us. The three of us end up outside in tears. (BTW - Damian is a Fitzgerald on his mother%26#39;s side.)

After that emotional journey we go to Taquamenon Falls. How beautiful! The site is very well laid out and easy to walk. The falls are something else. The water looks like liquid amber. I%26#39;d love to be there in autumn, it must be such a wonderful place to be. It%26#39;s so peaceful. We have late lunch in Camp 30 (?) and Damian has the most delicious linguini with wild mushrooms. We roam around the gift shop and I am disgusted. I was looking for some native art and find some... made in CHINA! Yuck! Surely that is an insult to native Americans? What is going on here?

We visit the Lower Falls. Lovely! And great that they tell you how many steps it is to the lower viewing deck (is it 94? I counted but forget). What a beautiful place. It must be the most amazing place in autumn.

We also visit the Centennial Cranberry Farm. I buy some cranberry mustard but upon unpacking last night I realise I must have left it in Susan%26#39;s house. So what.

Another visit to the Little Falls Inn in Paradise and a great chat with the waitresses. This place is really growing on me.

Evening on Lake Superior. I sit on the little landing stage outside our cabin. Not thinking about anything. The water is lapping around my feet. This is ME time. Except I%26#39;m not thinking about me or anyone. The sound of the water is hypnotic. I sit and muse. The lake is drawing me close. I haven%26#39;t been this relaxed in years.

Night on Lake Superior: The wind turbines over on the Canadian side of Whitefish Bay are sending a friendly twinkle over to us. I%26#39;m outside the cabin feeling the sand between my toes. The sky is so incredibly close to me. There are millions of stars and I could pick any one of them to hold between my fingers. The Milky Way is mine, I could weave it into my pillow for the night. How absolutely wonderful. How absolutely incredible. How astonishing. How humbling.

    Trip Report (Lake Superior)

Pure poetry Clauds. Thank you for your wonderful, descriptive words.

I must comment on that sky at night. It truly is unbelievable. The stars are truly a blanket and the Milky Way so visible. Did you see many shooting stars? They are so plentiful in Northern Michigan, especially the UP. We also count the satelites going over. They look different from an airplane in that they don%26#39;t have red and green flashes and tend to move at a slower steadier pace.

When I was a girl I used to sit and gaze at the Northern Michigan sky and watch the lights from the airplanes wishing I could go wherever those planes were going. Europe, New York, LA, Chicago....I didn%26#39;t care, I just wanted to see the world. Well, as an adult I have been blessed to see much of the world. I now see those planes going over and think how unlucky for those people riding to Europe, New York, LA, Chicago, that they are not experiencing all that I get to experience on a quiet dock, on an immense lake in Michigan. Moms

    Trip Report (Lake Superior)

Great trip report Clauds!! BTW how is it that you ended up coming to the U.P.? I think the ice cream you are referring to is ';Moose Tracks';.

lungfruit, yes, Moose Tracks! That%26#39;s the ice cream! We left all the organising to our friend and she thought that some time in the UP on Lake Superior would be nice. And quite right she was, too!

Moms, no, I didn%26#39;t see any shooting stars. They must be quite some sight over the lake!

I just realised that I posted this on the Ann Arbor forum, I had meant to post this on the Paradise forum! Ah well...

It is always best to post on the Michigan forum, since that usually catches everybody%26#39;s eye. I have loved your reports, your poetry, and your enthusiasm for our wonderful state of Michigan. Our Great Lakes are our heart and soul. I am in awe every time I see them (which is pretty often) and it catches my heart just a little when I do. Immense, powerful. Thanks for your reports, and I hope you can return one day, as I hope to visit Ireland one day, too!

    Hello Clauds,

Nice report. I am glad you enjoyed the U.P. I have lived here for over 30 years and I can tell that you got into what the U.P. is all about. Friendly, no rush, rush, just lay back and relax. I have a home on a bluff that over looks the Northern tip of Lake Michigan. Each time I look out at the Lake it is different. Some days you can hear the waves crashing on the shore and other days it is as quiet as a mouse.

Thank you for such a nice review.

Hallo tymetraveler and Yooperbacker. Thank you (and indeed all of the other posters) for your kind words. I remember looking at my atlas as a child and wondering about all those places. In a way I still can%26#39;t believe I was actually there! But I was and what a great time I had!

    Clauds,

Completely agree with you about the Shipwreck Museum. We found it one of the most moving experiences ever.

BTW, next time you visit Michigan, try printing directions using the %26#39;Avoid highways%26#39; option. We almost never use the highways if we can possibly avoid them. In my book, it%26#39;s far more interesting journey traveling via Tawas, Oscoda and Alpena on M23 and, thence to Mackinaw Bridge, as much as possible along the shores of Lake Huron.

Everything you never wanted to know about roads in Michigan:

    michiganhighways.org/trunkline_system.html

Finally, no rush. You%26#39;ve got to start planing for your next visit to include, in my opinion, the mid and west side of the UP. You%26#39;ve seen Leelanau in the Lower Peninsula, stand by for Keweenau in the Upper!

Oh Uasal, if only you knew how much I want to go back to Michigan/Ontario!

Why does anybody want to come to Ireland when you have so much beauty at home?

Thank you so much for your report. I grew up in the U.P. but did not appreciate it like I do now, I have a similar itinerary planned for October and your wonderful report has me looking forward to it even more.

pirates, thank you very much for your comments. Strangely enough just this evening we were talking to acquaintances and I was waxing lyrically about Lake Superior. I would go back tomorrow. I Will GO back. There is something compelling about the place. Enjoy. But then who am I to tell you...?

    Old Mission Peninsula Restaurants

Hi - Going back to our annual winery trip (12 women) in October and was looking for a lunch spot on Old Mission Peninsula. Any recommendations? I can’t remember the name of the one we have gone to in the past but we wanted to try something different this year. Any thoughts on the Boathouse? Thanks

    Old Mission Peninsula Restaurants

We like the Peninsula Grill. Excellent food and service when we have visited.

We used to like Bowers Harbor Inn, but there seems to be a lot of negative reviews for it for a good while now. You might give the bar restaurant in back a try, it was always good, also. The name escapes me at the momemnt-the Bowery?

    Old Mission Peninsula Restaurants

That’s actually where we went. I asked one of my girlfriends. The first 2 times we went to Peninsula Grill it was great but last year we had some problems. 3 or 4 orders of food were wrong and they claimed their dishes were all dirty so some of us got plastic spoons for our soup and wine in a regular glass. The place was not busy so we joked that the workers must be whooping up in the kitchen using up all the wine glasses and silverware. It was all very bizarre so we just laughed about it because that is all we could do. We wondered if it was under different management because we never had an experience like that there before. The waitress was young and I think she was new so maybe we scared her. 10 women without their husbands or children and tasting wine all day could scare a young girl! LOL

U R too funny, Kilarney! Can I become the 11th woman in your group this year? LOOOOOLLLLL!!

I%26#39;ve only dined at the Bowers Harbor Inn. We had a private room for my extended family to celebrate my parents 50th anniversary. It was lovely and the food was great. We all loved the story of how the Inn is haunted! Great fun! The reviews haven%26#39;t been great lately so I%26#39;m not sure it is still as good.

How about The Boathouse restaurant? I have not dined there but the view looks so lovely.

    http://boathouseonwestbay.com/

Have a great trip with your friends! Moms

We make such spectacles of ourselves when we go on our Mackinac trip that the business owners remember us from year to year and have nicknamed us the Mac Pac! Husbands lose their wives there because they say we are more fun and they ditch them to hang with us instead. LOL

Thanks Moms - that%26#39;s what we were thinking when we went by the Boathouse. I%26#39;ll write back if we end up eating there.

I am back from my annual girl’s winery trip. We did end up eating lunch at the Boathouse and we all really enjoyed it. There were 9 of us this year and we were at the Boathouse around 4:00. Since it was late for lunch and early for dinner we were seated right away. The deck was full but we still got a fantastic view of the bay from the restaurant. Our waiter was very attentive and funny. The food was a bit pricey but it was very good and all of us said we would go back again. Their deserts were wonderful (I had pumpkin cheesecake) and they had a nice wine list.

The weather was spectacular; the colors although not quite peak, were beautiful. Another wonderful trip to TC.

Glad you had a great time at the Boathouse. Always great views!

    Fall Color Report

I thought I would start a new post for people that would like to report what the Fall Colors look like in their area for this Fall Color Season.

As the Fall Colors change you could update your report.

Here in Manistique, in the Upper Peninsula, at the tip of Lake Michigan, the colors are about 15%.

    Fall Color Report

Bay City, mid-MI, nothing...lol. Yet. An odd branch here and there.

    Fall Color Report

Here in the Keweenaw we are at 50% plus. Probably 10 days, at the most, and it%26#39;s all going to be gone.

I%26#39;d put our color here at the tip of the mitt at about 10%. With the cold and rain we%26#39;ve been having, I%26#39;d say we%26#39;re 10 days or so from peak.

Oscoda Au Sable high trail and lumbermans monument. The kids and I hicked 1.75 miles on the high trail and it was 10% at best.

Update - Here in Manistique the colors are about 25% now. Manistique is along Lake Michigan and the color changes slower here because of the location of the Lake near us. The temperature of the Lake keeps it warmer in this area and thus cause the colors to change slower.

Colors will change quicker inland because of the cooler nights.

    Update...

Colors here around the Northern tip of the lower peninsula really coming on right now...getting better every day! I think this weekend through next weekend will be fantastic color viewing. It seems that the trees bordering open spaces, fields, roads, etc. change first and those are exploding right now! The more heavily wooded areas are still quite green, but for a color drive or a fall hike right now is awesome. The weather%26#39;s supposed to be gorgeous all weekend too!

Sebewaing, Western Thumb (I call it the %26#39;hangnail%26#39; area of the Thumb): We have the beginning of a lovely Fall. The color is about 40% and we%26#39;ve had the most perfect weather. I%26#39;d take this year around! Sunny and mid-60s. Even the nights haven%26#39;t been too cold. We are going to have to start raking soon as the leaves are falling quickly.

I hope the Upper color holds for a couple more weeks as we have a road trip planned for the 24th weekend to the Escanaba area.

Very near peak here in Houghton and Keweenaw counties. The yellows and oranges seem especially vivid this year.

Things have changed here quick in Manistique in the Upper Peninsula. The colors are about 75%. The colors here are not as bright as some years. More of a soft color.

Just returned from Traverse City and color was at least 50%. Some places it seemed more. Very beautiful and I would guess at least another week or so of color there.

    Lost Lake, Wetmore Michigan

Does anyone know if Lost Lake is a good boating and swimming lake.

I have been trying to find a site that can tell me about the quality of the lakes in Michigan. Any sites that can help? The DNR site was not helpful.

    Lost Lake, Wetmore Michigan

    Hello boat girl,

Here is a site that may add more information for you. Michigan Interactive web site -

    http://www.fishweb.com/index.php

The link below takes you to the map section of the Michigan Interactive site. Some maps have descriptions about what kind of fish are there and other information.

    fishweb.com/recreation/…index.html

    Lost Lake, Wetmore Michigan

Lost Lake is very nice for pontoons or fishing boats. There is a real nice sand bar for swimming. The lake is not large for big speed boats. It is beautiful in the summer and fall. We live on the lake and is very peacefull and private.

  • Grey Hound Stations

Do they have lockers at the stations where you can lock your luggage up. until your bus arrives.

    Grey Hound Stations

I don%26#39;t know the answer to your question, but after seeing that you had no replies, called the Detroit Greyhound station literally 43 times between 10 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. yesterday. Most of the time, I got a busy signal. When the phone actually connected and rang, no one ever answered, even when I left it ring and ring.

Called twice again this morning. . . . .busy once, no answer after 21 rings the second time. None of this speaks very well for the customer service to be expected at that station. Because of security issues, I also am skeptical about the availability of lockers, but really do not know. I%26#39;ll try the phone again later this morning and perhaps some other TA members will answer in the meantime.

    Grey Hound Stations

Well, I guess that I am not going to be able to answer your question. At various times again today, I called the Greyhound station in Detroit and they never answered the phone.

I verified the phone number with 3 sources, including the Greyhound corporate office. Their Detroit staff apparently has little interest in customer service and the corporate head office does not know if the Detroit station has lockers. Neither was the head office able to give me any other phone number or even transfer my call to Detroit via their internal system.

Their advice? ';Verify the availability of lockers when you arrive at the Detroit station.'; Apparently, you also will have to verify the availability of buses as well.

I have not used Greyhound in 20+ years and, based upon this experience, I may wait another 20.

Sorry not to be more helpful.

I%26#39;m fairly sure they don%26#39;t have lockers, on account of security concerns. Whether they%26#39;re ';Homeland Security'; concerns or just that the lockers would be monopolized by the homeless folks in the area, I do not know.

I%26#39;ve taken Greyhound a few times recently, between Cincinnati and Detroit. It%26#39;s cheap, reasonably convenient, and more-or-less tolerable depending on who you sit near on the bus.

Buy tickets online, and mostly avoid Greyhound station staff.

By an interesting coincidence, I was downtown at lunch today and stopped at the Greyhound Station on the way back, just out of curiosity.

The station DOES have lockers (about 2 dozen of them), but none had keys visible. That means either that all of them were being used or--for security reasons--the lockers no longer are in service. I don%26#39;t know which is correct. There was a long line and I did not have time to wait to ask.

    Weekend getaways close to chicago

We live in NW Indiana and are looking for a weekend getaway idea for Oct. 24-26.

We don%26#39;t want to travel more than 3 hours.

Any suggestions? We like small towns with little shops to browse, we also like touristy things like trolley tours, etc.

    Weekend getaways close to chicago

New Buffulo, St. Joseph, South Haven, Saugatuck/Douglas, Holland and Grand Haven could all be reached in less than 3 hours. All have a small town feel with shops. My favorite of them all is the Saugatuck/Douglas area.

It may be too late in the season but you may find a boat ride in Saugatuck. I don%26#39;t know if the Duck tours and Dune rides are still open.

    Weekend getaways close to chicago

I just did a little checking and found out that the last day for Dune Rides this year is Sunday, October 19th, 2008.

    http://www.saugatuckduneride.com/index.htm

The Saugatuck Boat Cruises run until the last Sunday in October. That would be October 26th for this year.

    http://www.saugatuckboatcruises.com/

    Thanks for that Yooper.

Anytime Rono. I enjoy reading your advice.

Just spent a great day in Holland and they have a WONDERFUL Farmer%26#39;s Market on Saturdays and Wednesdays. St Joseph has one too tho much smaller. The advantage of St Joseph is that you can see the lake from the downtown area and the sunsets are fabulous. St Joe has fewer shops tho. -- Holland probably has the most. Each town has it%26#39;s own charm. South Haven and Saugatuk are great too. Too bad you aren%26#39;t coming this weekend because the leaves are at their peak --the drive itself would be spectacular.

    BBQ Wild Wings in Jackson

No that isn%26#39;t a misprint. It is Barbeque Wild Wings not Buffalo and I%26#39;ve been a few times now. The service is getting better but still a bit slow. Great place to watch some games though. There are big screens all over, several beers on tap, great atmosphere, and the wings are pretty good. If you%26#39;re in Jackson for a weekend and looking for a place to watch some football games this place is a good one.

romantic weekend in the area - suggestions?

My husband and I want a romantic weekend in the Detroit area, but are not sure where to stay. We%26#39;re looking for a hotel that is somewhat upscale with a pool, hot tub, fine dining, dancing, and room service.

I would appreciate any suggestions that you have.

romantic weekend in the area - suggestions?

I don%26#39;t know how much you%26#39;re looking to spend, or your age range, but I%26#39;d suggest you look into the MGM Grand - Detroit. I%26#39;d say it%26#39;s very upscale and it has all the things you are seeking in your post.

    www.mgmgranddetroit.com

romantic weekend in the area - suggestions?

does the MGM Grand have a pool?

According to their website, the MGM Grand in Detroit has an indoor pool, spa and fitness center.

If you want a romantic dinner, I%26#39;d highly recommend the Whitney. Amazing atmosphere and great food, although a bit pricey. It%26#39;s a short drive from MGM Grand.

What about the new Book Cadilac? They have a pool, fine dining, ect. Obviously I haven%26#39;t satyed there because its brand new, but its getting rave reviews. They have a special right now where you pay full price for the first night and $19.24 for the second night. It may be worth checking out.

    starwoodhotels.com/westin/…

MGM Detroit is the way to go...they have a promo right now, I didn%26#39;t want to post it yet, until I book myself! Going to stay this weekend hopefully

But if you type in ARROW you get a deep discount. A regular room goes for $299 everyday, with the code its $225

There is a Hyatt in Dearborn, haven%26#39;t stayed there but Hyatts are usually pretty nice....

Stayed at the Ren Cen Marriott twice, first time I liked it, second time I didn%26#39;t. Better location than the MGM Grand, but not as nice. If you don%26#39;t mind driving or catching a cab to hotspots like Woodward or Greektown, MGM would be great.

    Have fun!

Detroit two story loft -- Vacation Rental by Owner

Has anyone had any experience staying at the two story loft listed as vrbo.com/160224? Its description reads ';Located in historical Brush Park...two blocks from the Downtown Area.'; Any comments about the area and accessibility for the Detroit Jazz Fest would also be appreciated.

Detroit two story loft -- Vacation Rental by Owner

The place looks beautiful. But I wish I knew the actual address to give you a better read on it. As someone else said to you in a different thread... Brush Park is being regentrified... slowly.... and is not a destination area in itself.

Detroit two story loft -- Vacation Rental by Owner

I%26#39;m waiting for the owner to respond to my request for a street address, so that I can mapquest the distance to Hart Plaza.

Free secure gated parking with no in/out restrictions is a plus...though I%26#39;d expect to walk rather than drive what I estimate as 1.5 miles to Hart Plaza for the jazz fest.

30-something stepsons may be returning to loft late at night after gambling. Where are casinos/Greektown in relation to Brush Park?

Motor City Casino is the closest and would be walkable, but I wouldn%26#39;t do it late at night. I would take a cab, even for a few blocks.

They could take your car back and forth. I%26#39;m sure they could get validated parking.... I understand you can do that at Greektown Casino.

I don%26#39;t gamble so I don%26#39;t know for sure. Hopefully someone who has actually gone to the casinos will come along and answer you.

    AB

Greektown casino is probably about a mile south of Brush Park - depending on where in Brush Park. Can be a long walk after a night of fun. I would probably drive or cab it.

Am I hearing that it%26#39;s considered prudent leaving a casino to take a cab even for a few blocks after midnight and maybe I shouldn%26#39;t be overly concerned about the vrbo location in Brush Park? For example, the 30-somethings should plan to take a cab even if we have rooms at the Courtyard?

I think it really depends on the exact location of the condo. If you are in the first ones right on Woodward just north of I-75 it is not a bad walk as you are in the Foxtown/Stadium area, walk over the freeway and are there. If it is farther north/east you might have several blocks of more run-down, somewhat abandoned buildings. I don%26#39;t really know that area much since I have never had the need to venture there, other than seeing the new condos from the Fox area.

The condo%26#39;s location is four blocks north of I-75 and one block east of Woodward.

There isn’t much around Motor City Casino so if you are talking about walking from that casino after midnight I would suggest getting a cab regardless of where you stay. If you were at the Courtyard - if there are crowds out late at night then they could walk from Greektown to the hotel but use common sense and be aware of your surroundings. I’ve walked in that area with a group of women late at night and never have had an issue but again- be smart about it. I’m not sure I would walk over I75 after midnight. I would suggest a cab for that ride as well.

We stayed at the Rainbow Motel in May and the regular rooms are nice. The staff was more than helpful. but Im not sure how the Jacuzzi rooms are. If they are anything like the regular rooms then I would stay there. good luck and let us know how it is.

Things to do around Sleeping Bear if it rains?

We have plans to be up there on Sunday and Monday - but the forecast shows a decent chance of rain. We%26#39;d still like to come up to this area, but could someone give us some ideas for things do do if the weather doesn%26#39;t co-operate?
