Gaylord Trip Report

Having just returned from a %26#39;nostalgia trip'; to childhood haunts in northern Michigan, here%26#39;s a few comments.

We stayed two nights at the Best Value Royal Crest. I would not describe it as fondly as some others have, but it was not bad - sort of the definition of a 2-star. See my review for more. We also spent three nights at the Heart Lake Resort cabins a few miles south of Gaylord. While ';resort'; might be a stretch for elderly cabins that could really use some new furniture and paint, the location was wonderful: right on Heart Lake, which is small, incredibly tranquil, rural yet convenient to many things. If you don%26#39;t mind a rather rustic aspect, I would recommend this place.

We took some of the suggestions others have made on this forum for eateries. We would absolutely confirm the recommendations to eat at Diana%26#39;s Delights. Wonderful, wonderful sandwiches, fast service. And they do breakfast now also. The Sugar Bowl, which I had not eaten at since the 1970s, was excellent as expected. Gobbler%26#39;s was great for breakfast, and very inexpensive.

All in all a very enjoyable return to old stomping grounds. Thanks to those on this forum who helped with info.

Gaylord Trip Report

Nice report. Gaylord is a great area, and it%26#39;s changed so much in the last 10 years even. We started going there (for a Sisters%26#39; Weekend) back in 1988, and the shopping opportunities keep us coming back.

Gaylord Trip Report

Gaylord had certainly changed since 1979 or so, last time I had been there. By changed I mean ';grown'; in commercial development west of town. But the Main Street blocks retained their charm.

I neglected to mention eating at Bennethum%26#39;s which was also very good, with a most pleasant atmosphere.

Thanks for the info on Gaylord. My husband and I are planning on driving down next week for some shopping excursions. Mind you I am the shopper and he is the driver. One of the places I like to stop and eat at is Mancinos Grinders. There use to be one in the Sault a few years ago and we loved it. Any really good places I should stop and shop at besides Khols, Big Lots, Walmart supercentre.? We are planning on staying at Holiday Inn Express. Haven%26#39;t made any reservations as of yet.

You should really stop into Indian River on your way through. Make a stop in for breakfast or lunch at Wilson%26#39;s Restaurant (a local favorite...not heavy on ambiance, but great homemade food) then swing downtown to McClutchey%26#39;s store for an old time department store feel with service you don%26#39;t find anywhere else these days. McClutchey%26#39;s has been a family business in Indian River for over 75 years and carries some of my favorite lines like: Pendleton, Woolrich, Columbia, Life is Good, etc. You might check out the Hometown Inn in Indian River too...just off I-75, it just changed from a Holiday Inn Express...nice, newer place, cheap rates and only a 20 minute drive to Gaylord or Petoskey.

thanks for the info.
