Working on Mackinac Island

Hello everyone. I%26#39;m new to this websites forum, and thought I%26#39;d ask here if anyone has experience working on this island? I%26#39;ve been there several times and love it. I have read about how they hire people for seasonal jobs there and give you a place to stay provided you pay for it. So, my girlfriend and I have been looking at Murray%26#39;s Hotel since there policy seems more reasonable with the pay you work for and having a place to stay. It sounds fun to me, since I%26#39;m 18 and will be 19 when I go. Could anyone confirm that it%26#39;s a positive experience? I%26#39;m just trying to make some money, have a good time, and save up so we can travel more.

Working on Mackinac Island

I can only speak for Mackinaw City, but I expect the experiences are similar. This was many years ago.

The experiences were mostly possitive and there were quite a few college students that returned for a second or third year. The experience largely depended on which company they were working for, and I expect that is still the case. We made friendships over the summer that continued through the rest of the year.

I would see if I could talk to some of the youth that worked there last year. Perhaps you could ask the Murray Hotel for some references.

Working on Mackinac Island

I worked on Mackinac island in 2001. I can assuredly say that it was my best summer. This island has special atmosphere and if you spend there several months you want return again and again.

If you like bikes and can live without car Mackinac island is for you. It is possible to buy a bike and explore the island at leisure. Especially I recommend a ride around the island at sunset.

I worked at the Grand Hotel in the summer of 1996. We were so understaffed, that at one point, I worked 12 days straight without a day off. I went into this job thinking I would be working 40 hours a week and have free time to bike, hike and do my own thing. Quite the opposite of what I had expected.

They did set me up with a place to stay (rent came directly out of my paycheck), I had my own little room at the ';Grand Cottage'; and there were several others that stayed in the same cottage. There was only one bathroom to share between the eight of us.

I planned on working there the entire summer, but only stayed a month. I couldn%26#39;t wait to leave the island. My cousin also was going to work the summer there, but she left after 3 weeks, due to the understaffing at the hotel she worked at, as well.

Always remember that work is what you make of it. You%26#39;ll find people that don%26#39;t like Mackinac Island, but love Disney and you%26#39;ll find people that hated working at Disney.

My best advice is to find something that seems exciting to you - and if that sounds like Mackinac Island, then by all means give it a try. And remember that long hours, difficult bosses and rude guests are everywhere. You can at least be somewhere you like while you deal with them!

Hope you have a great summer in 2009!
