My daughter has a sporting event at Cobo and we need a hotel for the weekend. It%26#39;ll be in the dead of winter, so trying to minimize time outside traveling to Cobo and out to restaurants, but will not have a car. It%26#39;s just the two of us, so which would be best?
*Sheraton Riverside (not fond of Sheraton%26#39;s %26amp; the reviews on this one aren%26#39;t reassuring)
*Marriott (she really wants a pool to chill in after competing, but...)
*Courtyard
*Hilton Garden Inn (how%26#39;s the neighborhood/transportation for us?)
*Holiday Inn Express (again neighborhood/transportation; I can%26#39;t seem to get a handle exactly where this is in relation to others)
I%26#39;ve read the reviews on all of them, but would like some specific input for our situation.
Need to book soon, so any help is appreciated!

We also considered the Inn on Ferry Street. Would that be appropriate for a teen? thx!

The Marriott at Ren Cen and Courtyard (in Millender Center) are only a few blocks from Cobo. Ren Cen and Millender are also connected to Cobo by the People Mover, an elevated tram that encircles downtown. It runs in a counter-clockwise loop and costs $.50. There is a skywalk over Jefferson Ave that connects Ren Cen and Millender.
The HGI is about six blocks north of the Courtyard near Ford Field. It%26#39;s close to Harmonie Park which has several trendy restaurants. There is a People Mover Station (Cadillac Center) about three blocks away.
Greektown is about midway between the Courtyard %26amp; HGI and has several restaurants, small shops and the casino.
The Holiday Inn Express is about four blocks north of Cobo on Washington Blvd at Michigan. I don%26#39;t believe there are many restaurants within walking distance, however the Westin Book Cadillac is supposed to open across the street on October 1 and I%26#39;m sure it will will have restaurants onsite.
The Inn on Ferry is one block from the Detroit Institute of Arts and is housed in several old homes. It%26#39;s about 2-3 miles north of Cobo and the main part of downtown and would require a daily cab ride.
I%26#39;ve stayed at the Marriott and Courtyard and had no complaints with either. If you opted for the Courtyard, you%26#39;d be close to all the restaurants in Ren Cen %26amp; Greektown and your daughter could take advantage of the pool/health club in the building.
There is a post on here that states the People Mover will be closed from July 20th to Aug. 16th for maintenance.
That post is here -

The OP states ';It%26#39;ll be in the dead of winter...';
Thank you for the detailed input!!
The group sponsoring the competition placed us in the Marriott/Ren Ctr for 139 nt. He assured me there would be plenty of places to eat with a teen (I sure hope so, hungry teens are NOt much fun!) She loses out on the pool tho.
It%26#39;s months away, so I have time to cancel if it doesn%26#39;t look like this is the best place for us.
You have a good rate at the Marriott. If you can live without an indoor pool, it is not a bad place to stay, but it isn%26#39;t perfect. It does meet your criterion for not having to go outside very much to find restaurants. Sadly, far too many Detroit hotels suffer from poor staff attitudes, training and supervision, Marriott included, as you can see from the TA reviews.
Best location for Cobo clearly is the Sheraton Detroit Riverside Hotel, right across the street from Cobo Center, but while they have an indoor pool and proximity to Cobo, there really seem to be some major problems with staff training and supervision. Sheraton also is more isolated, so you would have to walk or take the People Mover to just about any other place downtown. Major renovations to this hotel were completed less than a year ago, so staff issues might (OK, it is only a ';might';) be corrected by winter IF management isn%26#39;t totally clueless.
If pool is an important consideration, I would choose Courtyard, but also be aware of the door security and staff attitude issues mentioned in the reviews. As other posters have mentioned, Courtyard is connected directly both to RenCen (with its shops, restaurants and movie theatre) and to the People Mover station which can take you to Greektown and its various restaurants as well as to other venues downtown.
If weather is bad, the People Mover also is an option for transportation to Cobo. Unfortunately, it operates in a loop and only in one direction, so Cobo is about a 4 block walk or a 10-11 minute People Mover ride away. The good news is that there is an indoor station inside Cobo and the ride back to the RenCen station is only a few minutes.
Taxi is also an option, but can get to be expensive.
Thanks for the full story Tylerarb. I suspected much of it regarding the ';cons'; of each after reading all the reviews.
We just found out we can get the Sheraton for the same rate. The location did look somewhat isolated from restaurants and activities, as noted, and I%26#39;d like to minimize cabs. Pool issue aside, would anyone switch?
thx again!
Your best bet is the Courtyard. Excellent pool/whirlpool/fitness club. The People Mover will take you to Cobo but it%26#39;s literally a 5 minute walk straight in front of you out the door. The Riverside lost its Sheration affiliation and has had lots of problems despite the millions spent on Reno. Head to Fishbone%26#39;s or the Hard Rock Cafe to eat. Very short people mover ride or walk. Lots of activity at Hard Rock in Winter (it%26#39;s next to the Campus Martius Park skating rink)
Since I last posted back in July, the Detroit People Mover was shut down for maintenance and also had its operating direction reversed. For you--whether you stay at the Courtyard or the Marriott, the reversal of direction means that People Mover travel time to Cobo will be a lot shorter. Of course, the return trip to the hotel via People Mover will be longer, since you will be traveling a loop around downtown.
Thanks also to WindsoMotownGuy. I didn%26#39;t know that the Riverside already has lost its Sheraton affiliation. Amazing story after all of the money spent recently on renovations. Just shows the importance of a well-managed place, which that hotel certainly is not.
Cobo Hall Detroit is where many of Detroit%26#39;s premier indoor events and conventions are held. It wouldn%26#39;t surprise me if you reading this site right now is a result of you being in town for a convention, or you are currently preparing to go to one in the city.
Hilton Garden Inn is the best place where u can enjoy with your daughter..
