My spouse and I celebrated our 5th year anniversary in Saugatuck, Michigan with another couple. We stayed at the B%26amp;B, The Seymour House in South Haven. We arrived at night and actually drove past our destination. The surrounding area is very dark; but thankfully, our lovely hostess/host, Patty and Mike kept the lights on for us.
Although dark outside, we were awestruck by the beauty of the Seymour House. Our gracious hostess, Patty was eager to take us by the hand and show us around. They literally have a library of movies and books. There is plenty of warm beverages, bottled water, soda, popcorn and homemade cookies to enjoy at your leisure. Our hosts live on the property – but in another part of the house - so guests have privacy.
On our first night, we were fortunate to have the entire house to ourselves. After a delicious dinner in Saugatuck at the restaurant, The Butler, we came home and relaxed in front of the fireplace in the living room.
My spouse and I stayed in the Heather’s Room, while our friends lodged in Patty’s Garden. Although our room was nice, I wasn’t all that impressed by the skylight. The only view in the sitting area was the roof on the side of the house. The bathroom view was a little better with the sky and trees, and it had a jacuzzi tub. I liked Patty’s Garden better because (although smaller), the bathtub/shower area are separate; and the jacuzzi tub is in the bedroom. Currently, these are the only two rooms with Jacuzzis. They plan to add one to the Colorado Room in the near future. This room is spacious, adorable and away from noise. If we decide to stay at Seymour House again, it will be our first choice.
If you sleep late, here are two things to note: Heather’s Room is directly above the kitchen/dining room. There is a squeaky swing door (the host has his reasons for not fixing it), which is in constant motion as the hosts set up breakfast in the dining room. It’s annoying if you are trying to catch some Z’s. Patty’s Garden is the only room on the first level… it’s also next to the common areas. If early rising guests are in attendance, it’s a good chance they’ll gather here; and you can kiss sleep goodbye!
Moving on to breakfast, Patty is very accommodating to people’s dietary needs (with advance notice). Although next time, I will suggest more fruit. The first day we had waffles, bacon, banana bread and poached pear. I’ve never had poached pear and it was pretty tasty : ) She made homemade buttermilk bread which was GREAT when toasted! I took home a jar of Patty’s delightful homemade peach/pear/lime jam. Mmm, Mmm Good! On our second day we had Bacon %26amp; Cheese fortata and lemon bundt cake. There was coffee, milk, orange and passion fruit juice… and plenty of carbs. However, they lacked “starters” like fruit and cereal.
Lastly, there was a lot to explore on their grounds. There was a log cabin (also for rental), pond, 3 cats and a chicken coop. Man, how those chickens won’t stay still for a picture! LOL. Our friends, who are more adventurous than I, took a stroll on the path and saw some horses. They also surprised us with a picnic lunch prepared by Patty. We had the Grilled Marinated Chicken on Foccacia Bread, soup and salad. I highly recommend her lunch, for it was quite good!
Later, we combed Saugatuck to shop, wine taste (and buy wine) at Fenn Valley winery and purchase some delicious treats from Kilwin’s : ) For dinner we went to Lakeview Lanes in Douglas. It was only a 10-15 minute wait, good food and quite comfortable inside.
Although there were a few minimal things that we didn’t like about Seymour House; everyone had a great time overall.
Review - A Nice Getaway to The Seymour House
what a great review===you should write it in the review section so it%26#39;s always there!! I just drove by this place yesterday....i%26#39;ve always wondered what it was like!!
If you go again drive a bit north on blue star and turn off on lake shore drive....there are a couple of lovely county parks up that way and you truely have the big blue all to yourself!! If I recall one was Allegan county park and the other was pier cove.
