Good vacation spot for early May

Hi there! I lived in MI all my life but have never once travelled in MI. We want our next trip to be local, cheap, and relaxing... but not completely boring.

I%26#39;m seeking something along Lake Michigan, a place that has a variety of things to do but also makes it easy to relax. All our recent vacations have been jam packed so I promised we%26#39;d relax on the next one. I%26#39;m not super into Historical stuff, so I don%26#39;t think I%26#39;d enjoy a place like Mackinaw Island that much.

We%26#39;d love to stay somewhere that is actually on the lake, like a cabin or something, but I%26#39;ve never done anything but hotels so would need suggestions there as well :)

We are planning ahead for our 2nd anniversary in May 2009. I know I%26#39;m starting early, but it%26#39;s because I seriously do not know where to go at all! Your help and suggestions are much appreciated :)

btw- if anyone thinks it%26#39;s too cold in May to go to Lake Michigan, please let me know! I%26#39;m not looking to swim of course, but would maybe like to do a dinner cruise or a boat tour or something. If May is too cold to sit outside or go on a boat, we might go further south for this trip. I don%26#39;t know what the weather is like on that side of the state.

I think it would be too cold. Average temps for Ludington (just to pick a spot) are 38-63 for May 1st going up to 47-74 for May 31st. Last year in mid-May a friend tried to have an evening get together on her screened back porch because her house is really small. After the first hour we all crammed into her house because we were freezing. That was in metro Detroit and it%26#39;s usually colder outside the city. Also most of the touristy stuff doesn%26#39;t really get going until you get close to Memorial Day.

Thanks for the reply! I almost forgot to come back and check. I guess I%26#39;m going down south for May but gonna find a place within driving distance of Detroit (I%26#39;d say no more than 5 hours). If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know, otherwise I%26#39;ll try the other State forums.
