We have a group of 7 adult family members who want to visit Mackinaw Island in September. We%26#39;re looking at either 2 nights in Mackinaw City and 1 in Mackinaw Island or visa versa. Condos would be great but could also do individual rooms.
Best place to stayThere%26#39;s advantages to staying in one place for all three nights as some places have specials for 3 nights, it just might take some looking around.
Most condos want at least a week%26#39;s stay, especially if it%26#39;s a peak weekend (like Labor Day).
The chamber web site (http://www.mackinacisland.org) has a good list of lodging options, including condos. I would suggest making reservations early to ensure availability.
While there is more to do in Mackinaw City during the evenings, there is something enjoyable about the peace of the island after most visitors have left for the day.
Hope you have a great trip!
Best place to stayA lot of people really seem to like Main Street Inn and Suites and its location can%26#39;t be beat-right in the heart of downtown Mackinac Island. It seems to get very consistent ratings from Trip reviewers, though I have not stayed there myself, nor even seen the inside of the place.
My rather biased opinion is to stay on the Island the entire time. There are several options for your large group. While house rentals do require a longer stay (often 2 weeks or more), the condos for the most part, only have minimums of 2 days. Perhaps those limits are even less since you are going during an off-peak time. Check out mackinac.com. Go to accomodations and then to houses and condos. The websites for the condos show you what kind of options and prices they have.
We have stayed at Sunset Condos several times with our family, and have thoroughly enjoyed it. They are about 1.5 miles from town, which has its good and bad points. But they have plenty of space, full kitchens, and outstanding views!
Other options include the many great hotels available. Main Street Inn is a great choice as mentioned already. Island House is also a great one for groups. Check out the hotel reviews here on TA to help narrow down your decision. Have a great time!
I would recommend staying on the Island. The Main Street Inn %26amp; Suites have very nice rooms.

The rooms are even nicer than the pictures and Yes, they really are that big. There is a two bedroom suite that would fit all of you. It has 1 king, 2 queens, and a sofa in the living room. In some of the suites the shower is in a room by itself. Which would be nice for a large group. They also have a small safe in the room. Here is a description from their site.
Two Bedroom Suite:
One bedroom with a king bed and another with 2 queens plus an adjoining living room with a large balcony overlooking Mackinac Island Main Street and the harbor. The suite is equipped with a wet bar, a coffee maker, a microwave oven, a refrigerator, 3 cable televisions, air conditioning, ceiling fans, an iron and ironing board, a hair dryer and terrycloth bath robes.
Rates are based on double occupancy. Extra adults are subject to the rate of $15 per adult per night.
I don%26#39;t know if this applies to the suites.
You have to decide if you want to stay in town or out of town. You would have to pay for a taxi if you don%26#39;t want to walk. I think it is about $6.50 per adult. Condos would have a full kitchen if you want to cook your own meals. There is a place to put groceries at in the suites if you want to do cereal or sandwiches.
I would take bikes if you ride. It is eight miles around the Island. I took my 6 %26amp; 10 year old three days in a row. It took us between 1 1/2 hours to 2 hours riding with a few stops along the way.
Hope this helps.
I recommend staying at the Cottage Inn Bed %26amp; Breakfast!
After staying on the island several times before at some of the pricier places, I have found the most CHARM at this cute little Bed %26amp; Breakfast.
The Innkeepers are very friendly and go out of their way to make you feel at home. The rooms are small, but cozy. It is located on Market Street, which is just the next street over from the Main Street - It%26#39;s QUIETER here!
Mission Point Resort or LakeView Hotel are good. check out greatgirltrips.com for other tips on Mackinaw Island
Three nights on the island would be too many for me, but I am more for doing, than relaxing on vacation.
Although you would have a better rate on a week%26#39;s stay The Shores at Mackinaw has nightly options. I have only driven through it, so I can%26#39;t comment on how nice the units are, but the view is spectacular.
