Mainly Romantic Getaways???

My Mom (55yr) wants to visit Mackinac Island but my Dad hates to travel/go on vacation, so I really want to take her in the near future (2010) but I wanted to know if the Island is mainly a couples romantic getaway place?

Thank you!

Mainly Romantic Getaways???

Mackinac Island is a family vacation destination! History, charm, water, fudge, bikes everywhere, kids can run around and actually have fun and learn something at the same time. Couples who want a romantic vacation can find it there too, but an overnight stay is required. Family daytrippers thin out after that last ferry leaves each day. And the kids who are still on the island tend to get worn out from all the fresh air and activity in the day time, so they sleep well at night.

Mainly Romantic Getaways???

While the island certainly has the ability to be romantic, we go there for the relaxation. While the island has a rich history that can be easily explored, it%26#39;s also easy to do nothing.

The lack of cars, chain restaurants, hotels and businesses (except Starbucks) is part of the charm that helps one step back to a slower pace of life.

If your Dad likes to relax, he can enjoy a walk, picnic, sailing, reading (the library is a jewel) or explore a bit of island history. If he truly dislikes vacations or travel, well, at least you and your Mom will have a great time!

Be sure to visit the hotel reviews here before booking and consider a downtown hotel/B%26amp;B. The Chamber website has some great downloadable maps (www.mackinacisland.org) with all their locations. Good luck!

Thank you so much! That helps alot!

Both my Mom and I are very active and love taking walks so if I booked a B%26amp;B not right on the mainstreet would I still be able to get to the Main Street/Shops, etc. easily without having to get a horse ';taxi';?

Most of the B%26amp;Bs are within walking distance. If not they probably have bikes available or you can rent them.

Ohhhhhhh, I want that map! Anyone know where I can get a paper copy of that downloadable map? I doubt I could read it very well if I tried to print it out, I would have to blow it up and use a ton of paper. Is there anyplace that would mail me one?

Thanks for helping! :)

I see your from California. To give you an idea about how big Mackinac Island is, it is only 3.8 square miles. You could put 20 Mackinac Islands in Catalina Island.

McTravelers - I would think a phone call to the Chamber would probably get you that map, though you should try printing it out as it will scale to a standard sheet of paper.

Hahahaha! Thank you Yooperbacker! I couldn%26#39;t stop laughing when I read your post!

That actually helps alot, now I am not worried about getting around at all!

Thanks again everyone for all the helpful info!

I go to the island for an all girls weekend every year and we love it. So to answer your question – no it’s not just for romantic couples! LOL Just a FYI though – I don’t go for the shopping there. There a few cute shops but the shopping is better in Mackinaw City IMO. My favorite parts of the island are away from Main Street. Check out Doc Crain hiking tours while there as well as ride bikes up to the Inn at Stonecliffe. It’s a beautiful part of the island. Enjoy. I leave in 101 days but I’m not excited or anything! :o)
