Say Goodbye to Sweet Georgia Brown

Per the Detroit News:

';DETROIT -- Sweet Georgia Brown, the upscale dining establishment with ';a classic southern flair,'; was shut down Wednesday after the restaurant%26#39;s owners failed to pay rent for several months. Passersby gaped Wednesday morning as men in black dismantled the restaurant%26#39;s furniture, and hauled the tables, chairs and benches to two overflowing Dumpsters outside the restaurant, which opened in 2002.';

A very tragic loss for Detroit

Say Goodbye to Sweet Georgia Brown

It certainly is a great loss! I am so sorry to hear this. My girlfriends and I had a wonderful, memorable dinner there last May. A tragedy it closed but in this economic climate, I%26#39;m not surprised. I know many restaurants in New York City are also closing. Crazy times we live in....Moms

Say Goodbye to Sweet Georgia Brown

That is very unfortunate to hear, CDJD. After reading Mom%26#39;s description of it last year, I had hoped to have a nice Detroit weekend, and that included eating there. Hopefully they can reopen at some future point.

We had reservations for Saturday night. Any ideas where to go now?

I%26#39;ve been hearing a lot of good things about the new Detroit Fishmarket (http://www.detroitfishmarket.com/).

Some other upscale places to consider are:

-- Roast @ Book Cadillac Hotel(www.roastdetroit.com)

-- Iridescence @ Motor City Casino (http://www.motorcitycasino.com/)

-- Coach Insignia @ Ren Cen (http://www.mattprenticerg.com/urc/coach.asp)

-- The Whitney (http://www.thewhitney.com/)

-- The Rattlesnake Club (http://rattlesnakeclub.com/)

All good recommendations. I ate at Roast early in January and at the Whitney just 2 1/2 weeks ago. Roast was only for wine and appetizers; both were excellent, but the appetizers (a tiny plate for 2 people @$22, had both of us laughing at the truly minuscule portions.

The Whitney dinner was great and the restaurant seems to have worked out some of its earlier unevenness when they went through a change in ownership/management. I was pleasantly surprised, as the time some months before the January dinner, the restaurant was almost completely empty. Even with the poor economy, things obviously are picking up.

Another interesting restaurant to add to your list is Atlas Global Bistro on Woodward Avenue about 5 or 6 blocks north of the Fox.

I%26#39;ve heard negative things about Detroit Fish Market, but I%26#39;d second the suggestion of Rattlesnake Club.

Discount dining certificates for the Rattler are available-- $25 off dinner for two-- at restaurant.com Currently the promo code ';CUPID'; (they change every few days) gets you the $25 certificate for $5.

If you like Italian, try Angelina near the Opera House - Witherell and Woodward on Grand Circus Park.

We had a delightful meal there!!
