Hey everyone! We are heading Up North between Christmas and New Years for some skiing. I snowmobiled in Northern Michigan a lot as a child and would like to introduce snowmobiling to my kids. Are there any snowmobile rental shops in the Petoskey area? How about trail maps?
Looking forward to spending time in the great white north this holiday! Moms
Snowmobile Rental
I%26#39;ve been researching this myself.

Also try google maps with ';snowmobile rental near Petoskey, MI'; and you should find some places. Plan on spending $200-$250 per day.
Snowmobile Rental
I would like to know this, too!
Well Tev, you gave a good suggestion. Here is what I found:

Looks like there are several convenient options. Thanks! Moms
Hey Tyme, moms and tev...
For snowmobiling near Petoskey I highly recommend you head over to Indian River. The trail systems are some of the most extensive in the north and some of the most obsessively groomed. The Indian River area trail systems can lead you to Gaylord, Cheboygan, Mackinaw City, Harbor Springs and Petoskey. You can get out on the lakes and zip around or stick to the trails. There are restaurants/bars with great accessibility and the scenery%26#39;s great. All the Northern Michigan trails are much busier on the weekends, so if you can swing a mid-week day I%26#39;d highly recommend it. Also, try to do a 24 hour rental and drive somewhere for dinner, it makes for a great evening.
Two of the three rental places in Indian River are on the site posted above (Burt Lake Marina and Rental Express) the third is Brentwood lodging. I think Rental Express has the best rates, but make sure they drop off and pick up the sleds for you at the trailhead as they%26#39;re located a couple of miles away. Brentwood Lodging might make you a deal on a cabin/snowmobile rental combo. I don%26#39;t think their sleds are rented as much as the other two, but they might be a year or two old. Burt Lake Marina%26#39;s a bit more expensive than the other two, but always has like-new Ski-Doo%26#39;s. These websites will help...

Have fun, but be sure you%26#39;re staying somewhere with a jacuzzi and a bar for after your day on the trails!
Guys-
I would suggest you try Spicer%26#39;s in Houghton Lake on your way up. They are one of the largest suppliers in the north (we drive down there from Kalkaska to get supplies when needed).
Also, most of the dealers rent out for a day or by the hour. There is one on 72 just outside of Grayling that advertises... but I%26#39;m not sure what the name is... I%26#39;ll look next week on the way to the cottage if you would like.
The trail maps... the state trails... you would need to go to the DNR webpage, and the best trail runs from Kalkaska up through the Jordan River Valley ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL FOR THE FIRST TIME SLED HEAD!!!!!!!!! You%26#39;ll want to leave the skis and pick up the skids!
Thanks to both of you! I mentioned snowmobiling to my kids and they were very up for it! They have had several new experiences in travel this year and they are extremely interested in trying this one. They loved snuba and surfing in Hawaii and rafting down the Jordan River near East Jordan. They think snowmobiling sounds just as exciting as these experiences! As a teen my family snowmobilied around the woods in the Lake Missaukee/Crooked Lake/Saphire Lakes area and I loved it. I hope we can fit this in! Thanks, Moms
Just be careful! The machines we grew up with are a far cry from the monsters they make now. They go as fast as cars now. Wear a helmet and watch out for barbed wire fences. Oh and don%26#39;t forget the schnapps :)
3:20 a.m. moms? I hope you%26#39;re in Europe.
Ahhh Rono, I wish I was in Europe but no. I am meerly a mom who has too many presents to wrap and a lawyer who has an emergency appeal to file. It is crazy and sleep is illusive right now. Sooo, I hop on the forum and think about my vacation up north.
Thanks for the info on recent snowmobiles. My hubby isn%26#39;t sure we will have time for this as the kids really want to ski on powder (we have a lot of ice on the slopes in the Poconos). It does sound like a lot of fun to go snowmobiling though! We ski in helmets and will use them if we snowmobile. Thanks for the info on barbed wire and schnapps!
Moms
How old are the kids? I think they have to be 18 to rent their own sleds - or at least 16 with a valid drivers license. You could probably get a two person sled if they are not old enough - make sure you check with any rental agencies when you make the arrangements.
