Traffic on W Big Beaver at 7:30 am?

My daughter and I are staying in the Troy area in late February on business. There are hotels close to her testing center, but I think we could save about $50 by doing a hotwire room. Would a 5 mile drive from Woodward to W. Big Beaver (Professional Center) be very heavy traffic at 7:30 am during the week? I%26#39;m a Thumbkin, used to 5 miles taking 5 minutes. Also, love to save money and am a fan of hotwire. I think we would end up in the Radisson Kingsley for $75 rather than $125 for Drury Inn. As long as we have a pool, we will be happy.

60 mph on Big Beaver Rd at 7:30AM? I%26#39;d anticipate a stop to wait for your speeding citation.

Oh, I thought I was going to be the first who posted to this question and I see I was hijacked of this chance by some guy from AZ, nonetheless. Jeezzz......

Anyway, my answer to your question is

R U kidding me? LOL. No, best not to attempt a 5 minute run on this road at 7:30 AM. IT will be busy and there are plenty of lights, too. Most people working in all those professional buildings along there, start at 8 AM, and they will be in a hurry themselves, so traffic will be heavy.

Best advice is to get up earlier than you intended and drive the appropriate speed, for your safety and others, and keep yourself from getting a ticket and having a bad mark on your driving record. Save some of that money you love to save......

I am very sorry if I implied that I would be driving fast...I was referring to Michigan%26#39;s Thumb where you CAN drive 5 miles in 5 minutes on country roads. I never know how to calculate how long it will take for 5 miles in the city. Yahoo says 14 minutes for the trip from Radisson Kingsley to the testing center. I was merely asking if the traffic would be very heavy at 7:30 am for Woodward and W. Big Beaver. My kids would bust a gut to think that anyone accused me of driving fast.

My dilemma is that I would rather drive 5 miles (unless it%26#39;s going to be 40 minutes) and save $50 by using hotwire than directly booking a hotel that%26#39;s 1/2 mile from where we need to be.

OK, we are sorry (aren%26#39;t we RedRox) for getting the idea you would be a speed demon on Big Beaver Rd at 7:30 AM-LOL LOL.

EH-I can%26#39;t really answer your questio regarding the hotel idea, but yes, it will be very busy on that road at that time. With lots of lights and highway ramp traffic merging onto the road, most likely. Give yourself the time to drive it and stay where you want to stay.

15 minutes is probably about right. Big Beaver (aka 16 Mile, Metropolitan Parkway, and Qarton depending on where you are) is a divided highway, 3-4 lanes in each direction. Speed limit is 45 or 50, but as mentioned traffic could be heavy that time of morning. Allow 20 minutes and you should arrive early.

Sorry, I couldn%26#39;t resist posting a smart a** reply to your post. I used to live at Somerset between Big Beaver and Maple Rd, but that was when Big Beaver was only 2 lanes. I guess I%26#39;m getting old... But as I recall 7:30 AM was peak rush hour and so I would expect traffic to be heavy at that hour and travel times will be slower than what they tell you at Mapquest or Yahoo.

Thanks all. I am now looking at Embassy Suites which would be about half the distance of the Radisson Kingsley. And, I can use Hilton Honors Points. I just need to make sure their remodel is completed and that the pool will be open.

Um, RedRox, you guess you are getting old?

Guess isn%26#39;t the right word, here. LOL. J/K!

I knew you%26#39;d eventually find my smart a** remark at the beginning at this post.....LOL.

The determining factor for you will be the weather, since you will be travelling in late February. A snowfall can easily double your drive time.

Big Beaver in Troy is a 4+ lane boulevard, but to get there from Woodward (Kingsley Inn) you have to use Quarton (16 Mile) or Long Lake (18 Mile), both of which are 2-lane roads that can be quite slow during rush hour. I would recommend one of the several hotels on or near Big Beaver in Troy.

John

I ended up getting a room on Priceline for $54, Courtyard by Marriott which is about 2 miles from where we need to be the next morning. Thanks for all the help.
