Grayling, Michigan in the summer.

What is in the area of Grayling for entertainment? We found a neat cottage to rent on the river but have never vacationed in this area of Michigan. We typically stay in the Traverse City area. Would appreciate any good or bad opinions.

Grayling, Michigan in the summer.

There are two very popular thing to do in Grayling.

#1: It is canoeing central in MI. There are several canoe liveries in town, and canoeing in this area is extremely popular, mostly on the Au Sable River. Very family friendly river, and I believe they do all they can to control the ';young'; and ';partying'; crowds as much as possible.

#2. Hartwick Pines State Park. Great campground. Or a great place for a day visit. Picnic area/ with wonderful playground. Nature center/museum. Walk on the paved trail thru the last stand of virigin white pine in MI, logging camp, chapel, self-guided tour. Allot 2-3 hours. $10 for entry into state park, unless you have a MI annual sticker, which in your case, unless camping, would not be the way to go.

Fishing is also very popular on these rivers in Grayling and canoeists/tubers must share the river with them.

Grayling is only an hour from TC, so you could go into TC for a day trip.

I wouldn%26#39;t say there%26#39;s a ton to do in Grayling, or at least no as much as there is to do in Traverse City. You can still find a few muesums and there%26#39;s a fair amount to do in terms of hiking, canoeing and other outdoor activities.

As Thymetravler previous mentioned, there%26#39;s Hartwick Pines which also includes a logging museum. There%26#39;s a Civilian Conservation Corps Museum (CCC) which is neat, especially if you don%26#39;t know much about the CCC. The only other major thing in Grayling is Camp Grayling, which is a largest National Gaurd training base in the US. I don%26#39;t know if they do tours or have a museum or anthing, but it is a pretty impressive place. Grayling is also only about an hour from Traverse City and Petoskey and maybe an hour and a half from Mackinaw City/Mackinaw Island.

Here%26#39;s a link to Grayling%26#39;s tourism website. http://www.grayling-mi.com/

In my opinion, you would probably enjoy Grayling if you enjoy more outdoor activities. If you%26#39;re more shopping/major museum-attraction/theaters/fine dining kind of people, I might not recommend it.

It really depends on the type of vacation you want. If you are looking for a lot of action, shopping, great restaurants, bars, etc... Grayling is not your location.

Grayling is really laid-back, and casual. There%26#39;s a little downtown area, but it%26#39;s not your boutique shopping that you%26#39;re use to in TC. However, we LOVE it there because it is centrally located (30 minutes to Gaylord, 45 minutes to TC, 40 minutes or so to Petosky). There%26#39;s some good golfing, some fabulous little lakes, Hartwick Pines, and you can canoe two very different types of rivers in the Manistee as opposed to the Au Sable.

Also, if you pick the weekend of the Canoe Race, it can be ABSOLUTELY CRAZY! But a lot of fun!
