When we spend 3 nights in Detroit in May we plan to visit the Motown museum and the Henry Ford Museum but my husband would also like to visit a shooting range, could anyone tell us if this is possible in a ';safe'; area of town? We%26#39;ve read lots about high crime levels etc so feel we need to be a bit cautious.
Thanks
shooting range in safe area?
Try the %26#39;Firing Line%26#39; in Westland. They have an indoor range and gun shop. Owners are retired police officers. Nothing in city of Detroit. Westland is a western suburb, about 30min from downtown Detroit.
shooting range in safe area?
Thanks for very prompt reply Max227, we will take a note of your suggestion. As you know Detroit well could you also give your opinion of best area to stay during our visit? We would very much appreciate your help.
Top Gun in Taylor is considerably closer to downtown than Firing Line, and is entirely non-smoking, if that matters to you. It%26#39;s a great range with knowledgeable and friendly employees. I don%26#39;t work there, but I do shoot there.
I%26#39;m not sure about Firing Line, but at Top Gun you can rent any of several full-auto machine guns if that experience appeals to you.
Re lodging choices, I think it very much depends upon three factors: (1) what you expect to do during the 3 nights (4 days?) in the area; (2) your budget and (3) whether you will have a rental car. This last point is critical since public transportation around here (bus) is extremely limited and, while getting around the city and to at least some of the suburbs is possible by bus, you would find it very limiting re schedules and routes.
Also, if most or even half of your time is likely to be spent in the suburbs, I think it would make more sense to stay in a suburban hotel and drive into the city when you wished to be there.
Detroit (city) has the Motown Museum and an excellent art museum (Detroit Institute of Arts), casinos, a fair and improving selection of restaurants, major sports venues and very little shopping. The city is much smaller than the combined size of its suburbs. Downtown Detroit is usually quite safe, but caution is advisable as it is in any large city.
The suburbs, in general, offer more restaurants (though many are chains), a ';safer'; environment, a couple of excellent museums (you already know about the Henry Ford) and, by far, the best shopping in the metro area. That said, all suburbs are not equal.
Post back with a bit more info and I am sure that some of us will have specific recommendations for you.
Tembo,
Just re-read your post and realize that you were asking only about shooting ranges, not lodging.
You%26#39;re fine, tylerarb. Tembo%26#39;s second post asked about where to stay. :) I%26#39;ve got nothing to weigh in on there, but your response is spot on.
Jenifera2,
Thanks. Going to have to read the entire thread next time; or maybe just stop multi-tasking and lay off beer!
I don%26#39;t know what part of Detroit you are staying in, but there are a couple more ranges to consider...
Target Sports (on Woodward) in Royal Oak or Double Action (on Dequindre) in Warren.
Enjoy your visit!
I haven%26#39;t been yet, but have driven by Firearms Exchange, which is a brand new range in Livonia, on Schoolcraft between Merrimen and Middlebelt.
Thank you all so much for your helpful advice regarding shooting ranges in safe areas.
Re location of accommodation, our plan is to visit the Motown museum, Henry Ford Museum, Ford Rouge River Plant and maybe Chrysler Museum. We are not too bothered about shoppng. We will have a hire car. After reading lots of information we were wondering about basing ourselves in the Dearborn area but as we do knot know anyone else who has ever visited Detroit it%26#39;s quite difficult to be confident about our choice of area - suggestions would be very helpful for us.
Thanks
