camping at Port Crescent State Park

Hello,

We are planning a camping trip this summer with 4 teens. We had hoped to get into Ludington State Park, but we cannot find a few sites together(for other familes we are camping with)for the dates we need. Can anyone suggest another park that is as nice as Ludington? My sister was looking into Port Crescent State Park near Caseville. We like a beach, wooded lots, and we need some flexibility so other families can join us at the last minute. We have a number of familes going, with kids from 1 year old 16 years old so we need a variety of activities.

Thanks for any recommendations !

Well I can assure you that the Michigan State parks fill up fast for the summer and may be more so this year with the current economy and people choosing to stay closer to home for vacations. With that said you might seriously want to consider booking the sites you need now and just paying a cancellation fee if you don%26#39;t end up needing all the space. Booking something last minute at a state park is near impossible during peak summer months.

Other State Parks that meet your criteria are PJ Hoffmaster near Muskegon and has great charming cities nearby such as Grand Haven. Another great spot is Orchard Beach in Manistee...approx 20 min north of Ludington. South Higgens Lake also has a spectacular beach/lake, wooded lots, and many campsites. Ostego near Gaylord is another great spot with easy day trips to Mackinaw City. Port Crescent is nice as well however there is not really much to see/do outside of the campground.

Good luck w/ your plans and book soon. They are currently taking reservations through the end of July

I totally agree with Orchard Beach State Park. Wooded sites, good beach (down the stairs, though, but there is a very nice beach just a bit up the road from the park, with very limited parking, that is more easily reached if stairs are a problem for anyone), very nice park, and there is quite a bit to do in the Manistee area. Or Traverse City, always lots to do there.

However, I think Port Crescent would be nice. Caseville has some shopping, some hot dog stand type restaurants, putt-putt, etc.

Holland State Park is also very nice. It has both wooded and open sites, a fantastic beach, plenty of biking paths, a dune climb, etc. You might consider it, since there are tourist attractions in the area, too.

But you must make those reservations as the first poster said, right away, and make as many as you think will be necessary, and cancel if needed when the time comes, because otherwise you can forget finding room for ';extra'; last minute people.
