Easiest Way to Downtown from Airport

I am going to be staying at the Westin Detroit Airport, and I was just wondering what different modes are offered to reach the downtown area (I will be going to Ford Field), as well as cost and effectiveness. Thanks!

Easiest Way to Downtown from Airport

Rental car: I-94 east to I-375 into downtown. Public transportation from DTW to downtown exists, but is long and painful. Cabs are expensive. If you will be in town for several days you are much better off staying downtown than at the airport - not much to do there and a long way from anything.

Alamo has $10 per day rental car specials going on now, from economy to full size. Check it out to see if Detroit is included. It%26#39;s better than using Priceline, Hotwire or the like, because you can cancel it if need be.

At that price, it%26#39;s beats all alternatives getting you to where you want to go.

A car is a good idea... but do understand that you will have to pay to keep the car at the hotel in downtown Detroit.... just like any major urban area.

Also note you would have to pay to park at the airport if you stay at the Westin. A better option would be one of the off-airport hotels if you really want to stay by the airport. Otherwise, rent for the day and return the car at night. Rent a new one in the morning.

I agree with the other posters. Cabs are pretty high priced and by the time you paid for one trip to and back it would most likely be more than what you could rent a car for.

It is basically a straight shot to downtown and only about a 15-20 minute drive from DTW. If you park at any of the three casinoes, go inside, and get your parking ticket validated it is free! Once downtown the people mover is an effective and cheap way to get around. It is .50 a ride.

Although when I go to Comerica Park or Ford Field I like to park at the Detroit Opera House parking garage for $10. It is very close to the stadiums and it is easy to get in and out of. They also have security.

Car. Coming from Chicago, you%26#39;ll thrill over the wealth of affordable downtown parking choices. Locals still think paying for parking is strange. If only they knew what people pay in other cities. I%26#39;d second the Opera House garage rec.

If you need a car, I recommend Thrifty at DTW. Not my favorite company, but that branch has nice people and lots of Chrysler Sebrings, which work for me. At non-event times, the airport location charges what seems like pennies a day. (Well, seems like it, after I take advantage of their always-on 10 percent off for Amex cardholders.)

Sad to say there is no train service or shuttle bus I took a cab and it was 35 dollars.

I%26#39;m surprised it was that low. You%26#39;re usually better off renting a car in Detroit than you are taking cabs.

Detroit Metro Airport website is now showing one-way taxi fare to downtown Detroit at $41 plus tip (';slightly more';, but it doesn%26#39;t say how much, if leaving from the McNamara Terminal--which is weird since that is the terminal that has most of the flights).
