Lansing Apartments

I will be attending Cooley Law School starting this spring, and am in desparate need of some good advice on where to live in Lansing. People have mentioned avoiding certain streets, but no one has mentioned the actual names of the streets to steer clear of. Can anyone recommend names of apartments that are safe, on the bus line, and close to Cooley? Also, how dependable is the bus system? Thank you, in advance, to all who reply! I appreciate any input you can provide : )

Lansing Apartments

Cooley Law School is in downtown Lansing. Although I know the area pretty well, I am unaware of any apartment complexes downtown near the school. There are many student housing choices in East Lansing, as you can imagine with Michigan State University there. Have you talked to the Law School about possible housing choices?

There is a bus system in Lansing called CATA. Check its website to see if any buses run down Michigan Avenue from East Lansing. That would probably be your best bet. There are also some nice areas not far from the school in Lansing as well as west of the school in the Waverly area. Again, the law school should have a list of housing available. Although Cooley was more of a local school, it is currently attracting more people from out of state. (I%26#39;m a lawyer in New Jersey and am currently working with two Cooley grads on two separate matters). They should be able to provide you with some guidance. Moms

I did not attend Cooley, but I did graduate from Michigan State in East Lansing. I actually lived in Delta Township, which is west of downtown. Safe, near shopping and other amenities, and on a number of bus lines. The big plus: much cheaper than East Lansing.

There are a number of rentals downtown near the law school, but the area is less desirable because the area basically closes in the evenings and on weekends. Not much to do, not much shopping (including groceries) nearby.

There was an article in the local paper a few days ago about downtown housing and Cooley students. Here is the link.

Downtown Lansing has made great strides in the past few years and while it is not Manhattan there is more going on than most people think.

The Arbaugh building mentioned in the article is located two blocks from Cooley. These are loft style apartments and pretty new. I don%26#39;t know what your price range is but they are pricey.

East Lansing does have a lot of student apartments and housing. If you are looking for something on the bus line in East Lansing, you want to get as close to Grand River as possible. Route 1 connects East Lansing and Lansing. In East Lansing the bus runs down Grand River Av. and the bus runs often. The bus line ends at the downtown transportation center, which is a two block walk to Cooley.

If you have a car, you will get the most bang for your buck by renting in the Delta Twp area of Lansing. There are a bunch of newer apartment complexes located North and South on Canal St, near the intersection of Saginaw Highway. The bus does not run in this area.

If you rent closer to Waverly Av. on the west side of town, there are bus lines but the apartment complexes are much older in this area and getting run down. However, if you are looking for a cheap place, you will find it here.

Wow! The Arbaugh Building! This certainly dates me as I recall shopping at Arbaugh%26#39;s department store when I was a girl. It was beautiful! I loved going school shopping there with my mother. We also loved going downtown to the Knapp%26#39;s department store and having lunch in their downstairs cafe.

I would look into the Arbaugh building for housing. It is invaluable to be near other students when you are enduring the rigors of law school. It is much easier to put together study groups. Just two cents from someone who has been there before! Moms
