I am looking to propose to my girlfriend in September on a trip to Mackinac Island/Mackinaw City. The budget is somewhat tight and I have already decided to wait until the weekend after Labor Day so most hotels will be in the ';off-peak'; season. I would like to stay on the Island, but if I can not find a cheap enough place to stay, we will have to stay in the city. I am looking for suggestions on where to stay in the city if I can not find a place on the island. Preferably it would be a place that is priced right (right around $100 a night) yet still is a very good hotel. I have been looking at the Baymont because of its price and high ratings, but would be open to any other suggestions. Also I am looking for possible places to pop the question, the girlfriend has never been up in the area and the last time I was here was 10 years ago, so any suggestions would be a great help be it around the city or on the island. Thank you
Looking for some help!I definitely think you should stick with your idea of popping the question on the Island. MC isn%26#39;t the place to do it, since you are going to the Island.
Only place I can think of in MC would be the bench that sits under the bridge, near the water, in front of the building that houses the fort entrance. Later at night, when no one is around. Or somewhere in the park right there, maybe near the lighthouse...??
Maybe on a ferry boat going over to the island-early in the day or late in the day, as maybe you will have the top deck to yourselves..just a thought.
Looking for some help!I agree, Mackinac Island is definitely more romantic. You could do it on the porch at the Grand Hotel (even if you don%26#39;t stay there), or you could rent a carriage to drive yourself and ask her then, or at Mission Point, or you could do it at Arch Rock since it has a romantic story behind it (though in a Romeo and Juliet kind of way, but you could tell her the story then pop the question). In short, there%26#39;s plenty of places on the Island you could do it.
In Mackinaw City, I tend to agree that the park with the lighthouse near the bridge would probably be the best place. Unless you%26#39;re the outdoors type then you could go for a nice hike in the woods and ask her then.
As far as where to stay, I don%26#39;t think you%26#39;ll be able to get a place on the Island for less than $100, even after Labor Day. You could check, but it seems unlikely. In Mackinaw, the Baymont is alright. Personally I don%26#39;t care of it because of the location which is closer to the highway and farther from the lake. Its not the end of the world, but its something to consider. If you%26#39;re looking for more romantic you might check out the Brigadoon B%26amp;B. I%26#39;m not sure what it costs, but it would be more romantic. There aren%26#39;t really any super fancy hotels in Mackinaw City but you could also try the Lamplighter, Rainbow, or Riviera. The Lamplighter and Rainbow are close to downtown and the ferry docks. The Riviera has great views of the bridge and is right next to that park we%26#39;ve been talking about. All three should be about $100 or less.
Since I will probably be proposing some time this year, I am enjoying this thread:-)
I probably won%26#39;t do it in northern Michigan, but if I did, the first place to come to mind is Tahquamenon Falls.
In Mackinaw City, it might be Fort Michilimackinac. The southwest blockhouse is usually quiet and has a magnificent view of the Fort grounds with the Straits and Bridge in the background. Another possibility would be any of the benches along the waterfront, after dark when the bridge is lighted.
On the Island, my first thought is the Cupola bar at the top of the Grand Hotel. The view is great and in the middle of the day you are likely to be alone on the upper level. A table at the Tea Room in Fort Mackinac would also be good.
Or if you wouldn%26#39;t mind the excitement of sharing the moment with a few strangers, Arch Rock. Too bad you couldn%26#39;t sneak out their early and spell out the question with rocks in the water below.
Good ideas, Light! Sooo, you are thinking of getting hitched, are you? Wonderful!! Let us know when you get engaged..!
Tahquamenon Falls would be a great place to propose. I%26#39;ve been there, it%26#39;s beautiful.
I agree the island is a wonderful place to propose. But...keep in mind, she should like any place you propose it doesn%26#39;t have to be on vacation or even out and about where ppl. are. All depends on the person too... On the island will be memorable too. Either way best wishes!
