We are planning a family vacation in TC for early June. Will it be warm enough to play in the water (Boating/swimming, etc) When does it usually start to feel warm in the day?
June Weather
It really depends on the week. Some weeks, I would say most defenitely, others I would say no.
Also, the thing is, it depends on what water you are referring to. The inner lakes are warmer earlier then Lake Michigan. The Lake Michigan water in TC will still be very cold at that time of the year. However, some of the inner, shallower lakes could be better, if we%26#39;ve had a warm spring.
Remember, in that area, the Lake Michigan water is cool at the Fourth of July... You don%26#39;t see lots of people playing in the water on Memorial Day weekend!
June Weather
Like the previous poster stated, it will be cold in the Grand Traverse Bay, where Traverse City is located. If you are born and bred Florida, well, I don%26#39;t think you will like it one bit! If you are originally from a northern locale, then you might ';get'; used to it quite quickly. But for just lazing around in the water that time of summer, nope. Sorry. You will certainly be able to boat; fish; maybe jump on a water trampoline and jump in the water and jump back on the tramp real quick..lol; Jet-ski; And air temp that time of summer can also be either very nice (hi 70%26#39;s) or very cool-50%26#39;s.
Thanks for your replies. We will likely be staying on Long Lake and although we are from the North originally, it has been many years since we spent any real time up there. I am looking forward to some ';cool'; mornings/nights, but also want to be able to take the boat on the lake, and at least be able to wear shorts and tank tops for part of the day. Maybe we should consider coming a bit later? Kind of looking to skip Cherry Festival in hopes of a less crowded feel to downtown and the parks. Maybe later in June would be better?
It%26#39;s very possible that Long Lake will be suitable for swimming; but it%26#39;s also possible that you%26#39;ll need insulated swimwear when you exit the water. Early June can be very nice and also cool... I always try to play ';comfortable'; golf on my birthday in mid-May and it%26#39;s always a toss-up. Touring in summer wear will be fine, but keep a sweatshirt/windbreaker at hand. As for missing the Cherry Festival crowds by waiting until after the festival... they seem to hang around constantly through July and August. June (maybe later) is a good bet, as is September. We locals always enjoy the time after Labor Day, when the crowds thin. But, having said that, staying on Long Lake and driving in to town (early) isn%26#39;t a bad way to enjoy the activities of the festival. I live 3 blocks from the festival location and have survived for 30+ years. Enjoy planning.
If you can rearrange your trip to latter June, please do so! Those few weeks can make a big difference in enjoying all of your water activities. And Long Lake will definitely be warmer than the other larger bodies of water (Lake MI and GTB). Again, temps might be in the 50%26#39;s-so no tanks and shorts, even during the day. So go ahead and change your dates, and everything should be good 3 weeks later. And the TC area does stay very busy from the Cherry Fest onward to end of summer. But that doesn%26#39;t mean it isn%26#39;t manageable or enjoyable. If that doesn%26#39;t bother you, then I%26#39;d come in late July to mid-August. Have fun!
The best time of year to enjoy water sports in Northern Lower Michigan is as Tyme suggests, mid to late July and early August. None of the lakes are balmy but they are quite refreshing without making one numb. Early June is really pushing it for swimming in northern Michigan lakes. It may be pushing it for tank tops as well. If you have the flexibility, I would choose later in the summer.
As for crowds, if you are used to spring break crowds in Florida, you need to rest assured you will not see such crowds in Michigan, even in the mid to late summer. Yes, it can get a bit congested on the main street of Traverse City during the Cherry Festival but other than that the people are well dispersed throughout the region.
Enjoy your trip! Moms
June is terrific as rental rates and crowds are down. It is beautiful in June. Water temps best in the smaller inland lakes. Big water warms depending on when spring thaw starts. Check out http://www.visitupnorth.com for a rental property right on the water. Lake Leelanau and Long Lake are two inland all sports lakes that have rentals on.
Bring the kids to Sleeping Bear Dunes (you will be glad if it is not too hot) any Michigan shoreline is amazing for beaches that have nothing that will eat you in it. The best stargazing you may ever see.
